Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumAlready talk of Harris being a VP pick - I don't think that will happen
Sorry to make another Kamala thread, but I want to hear what people think.
I love Kamala. I gave her money. But, a smart Democratic nominee will not pick her for one reason only.
California gives no electoral college advantage. Unfortunate but true.
In a close election which this looks like it will be, a VP pick has to give an advantage.
A balanced ticket would include someone from a swing state or a purple state.

(14,891 posts)It's not like she would be an septuagenarian white guy from vermont. She will come with a lot of energy to get out votes accross the country.
She would be an effective foil to pence on multiple levels.
I think she would be a good choice. But that's just imho of course.

(40,234 posts)I was initially very supportive of her and donated to her campaign. But for a variety of reasons cooled to her. Regardless, I have great respect for her.
I think serving as Attorney General or even taking a leadership role in the Senate would better suit her.

(3,165 posts)It takes decades to put an organization into place that can make a run for president feasible. You need a network that is community deep and nationwide. You need lots and lots of favors to call in. You need lots of people whom you have helped get elected who will pay you back.
Huge gobs of cash help, but Trump carefully built up his 'image' over many years. Between the Apprentice, appearing on Fox "News" and keeping a public profile, he gave himself a huge advantage that he would not have had even if he really *HAD* been the brilliant businessman he claimed to be.
Obama was the exception, but if Senator Harris (or anyone) had his charisma the race would be over already; folks like him, Bill Clinton (or Reagan) who thrive on crowds, love the battle and get energized by campaigning come along once or twice a generation.
Give her 8 years in the Senate, doing what smart candidates would do, making lots of rubber chicken speeches for house candidates and governors- because those are the folks you need in your corner, every bit as much as billionaires.
Rare indeed is the person that can go from first term Senator to President, and Obama and JFK also had time in the house.
Obviously, there's no love for Nixon or Pat Buchanan here, *BUT* the work that they did between 1962 and 1968 was why Nixon won in 68, after losing in disgrace in 62. Hundreds of speeches, many favors done, much funds raised, many names collected; that stuff's boring, but in the end it's more important than race, gender or even money.

But selecting a VP is very very complicated and very personal so I probably shouldn't be putting my two cents in the ring.

According to your logic, Joe Manchin would be a better pick because hes from WV.

(8,685 posts)Harris has charisma and intellect and charm and is tough as nails. She will be Biden's attack dog when they try to go after him with baseless lies and accusations. She also will help with the Latino and AA vote and with women. Biden is already strong in those swing and purple states.. Kamala compliments him perfectly... imo.

I feel the same way about Mayor Pete. All great people with lots of promise for the future, but at this time the presidency is WAAAAYYYY over their heads. They simply don't have enough experience to lead the country.

(1,701 posts)Biden needs a pick who will help in swing states, will be able to help move legislation in Congress, and be a loyal partner in the White House.
He will want someone who can be his "Joe Biden."
Looking more and more like Amy Klobachar is the smart pick to me.

(36,360 posts)The choice for a running mate doesn't, in the end, help a candidate but can hurt. Think McCain picking Palin. Biden was a safe pick for Obama. I do believe there is evidence that the running mate does little to enhance a candidates chance for winning but can hurt a candidates chance of winning.

(82,383 posts)or Joe would not have been picked. Delaware gives you 3 measly votes and they are going blue anyway. He was picked for his experience. It balanced out the concept that Obama didn't have much.
Joe needs someone young to counter the ageism thing, young but also seems ready to take over. They should stick with Joe the way Joe was always with Obama, for the opposite reason.

(16,508 posts)Obama didn't pick Biden to win Delaware and Dump didn't pick Pence to win Indiana. McCain didn't pick Caribou Barbie to win Alaska. Gore didn't pick Joe Lieberman to win Connecticut, or wherever the hell he came from. W didn't pick Cheney to win Wyoming.
Kerry DID pick Edwards in 2004 because he thought he could put NC in play, but obviously it did not in the end. I don't think the geographic advantage is the top metric anymore when picking VP candidates. That doesn't mean Harris is going to be on a potential Biden ticket, it just means where she comes from might not be the deciding factor.

Would I pick someone who falsely implied I was a racist? I don't think so.
