The Democratic Race Is Poorer for Losing Kamala Harris
But the California senator will remain a force.
BY CHARLES P. PIERCE
DEC 3, 2019
The Democratic presidential primary season hit its first major pivot point on Tuesday when California Senator Kamala Harris announced that she no longer had the resources to continue her campaign. Harris was a first-tier candidate when she launched her bid and remained one through most of the summer. Then, in the first debate, she dared call out friendly ol Joe Biden for the accommodations hed made with the defenders of white supremacy in the decades since he first got to the Senate. (I mean, its OK to attend Strom Thurmonds services, I guess, but you didnt have to eulogize the old racist sonuvabitch.)
They can all tap-dance around this as much as they want to, but Harriss audacity shook the comfort zones of a whole lot of people committed to the Democratic establishment, especially those with a history of complicity with the conservative movement. Couple that with the Kamala Is A Cop business coming from the portsiders, and Harris soon found that she didnt have a lot of room to maneuver. Her visibility dropped to near-zero. Her fundraising dried up. And, unsurprisingly, since campaign operatives generally have the loyalty of gaboon vipers when things go south, stories blew up over the weekend about what a hopeless mess her campaign had become.
And now shes out, and here the Democrats are. The next debate is on December 19 and, unless things turn around for Cory Booker in one quick hurry, every candidate on stage will be white, and most of them will be men. One of them will be a no-hope billionaire. Still another will be the mayor of a mid-sized Indiana city who won his last race with 8,500 votes. If I were an official of the DNC, and young black activists came up to me and told me to stick my party where the sun dont shine, Id have a hard time arguing with them.
Harris should still be in the race. She is a brilliant, accomplished woman who showed her leadership chops when she reduced Brett Kavanaugh to tears during his Senate confirmation hearings. (In fact, one of the only upsides to her decision that I can see is that now shell have all the time she needs to prep for her role in the Senate trial of El Caudillo del Mar-a-Lago.) She got screwed by the political system of legalized influence peddling that we were gifted by the Supreme Court. It has bothered me from the start that fundraising numbers were such an important metric for the DNC in deciding who should be on the stage and who shouldnt. Harris qualified for the December 19 hoedown, but she couldnt sustain her campaign until then. (Two whole weeks!) Instead, well get Tom Steyer, but not Julian Castro. Tulsi Gabbard, but (probably) not Booker. How is this good for anyone? In what is arguably a populist moment, this is simply crazy.
Kamala Harris will still be a force. Right now, she has to be at the top of every vice-presidential shortlist. Any Democrat elected has to consider her for attorney general. And, once the Senate trial starts. shell likely get all the free airtime that she couldnt get while running for president. In addition, she is the most important outstanding endorsement on the board right now. But the field is infinitely poorer without her, and completely out of touch with the actual dynamics of the 2020 election.

(11,495 posts)She deserved better. I didn't post yesterday because my replies to some of the BS I saw posted here would have gotten me in trouble. She was by far in the top tier that could take trump down, but she was also the target of smears, and lies. I am sure trump is happy as hell she is gone, he feared her more than anyone else.

(1,713 posts)a year ago, I was thinking Harris, Beto, Booker and even Castro would make a real run. I thought a young candidate could transform our party agian. Obama, Clinton- even Carter were under 54. I really thought this was the cycle that an invigorating, youthful face would shine and the generational contrast to Trump would stark on a debate stage. It was not to be.

(13,616 posts)This is so that she can become a VP. Let;s face it, be it Biden, Sanders, or Warren, they need someone like her. Yes there are two levels to that, one great (a fighter, as smart person), but also the fact is they will need a woman and a POC to show what the GOP cannot bring, especially if Trump maanmges to dump pence and put in Nikki Haley.

(3,627 posts)I thought Kamala had a lot of good ideas, but she had limited name recognition outside of California and that history as a prosecutor.
And don't diss that, it's important. When you talk about "young black activists" you're talking about the very people who are going to be very, very suspicious of someone who was a cop -- because yes, prosecutors and firemen and EMT's and a number of other folks you don't normally think about are in fact cops. She could be the most progressive damn prosecutor in the country -- and by some accounts she was -- and she would have to overcome that with the people who live in certain neighborhoods, who might be primarily AA but aren't entirely so. I worried about her chances because of that from the day she entered the race.
And I think part of the reason she had trouble defining herself is that in her best moments she actually defined herself as a prosecutor -- the sharp-witted questioner who made Kavanaugh cry, for example. But that's exactly who she couldn't be for a lot of those people she needed to win over most, who either had been or knew people who had been mistreated by the cops, lied to by the cops, or coerced into taking a record and prison term in a plea deal because a prosecutor made it clear their case was hopeless even if they really were innocent. It may be hard to imagine from middle class suburbia just how many people in some communities know someone something like that happened to. I only lived in such a neighborhood for five years myself, and I'm white, and it was thirty years ago, but it colors my perception to this day. To think it won't color the perception of a lot of voters Kamala needed would be very foolish.
It is very much to her credit that she saw the writing on the wall. She would make a fine AG, a much more productive post for her than VP should she take it, but she would be even more effective just returning to the Senate and letting her seniority there accumulate. She is young -- a trait that did recommend her highly over some of her competitors -- and she has a long future awaiting her.

(68,582 posts)because he is a man but because he can win the states we need and send Trump packing. We desperately need to save the courts. I hope Ginsberg can hang on. Trump is a monster and we must get him out. He has literally caused the death of children; he is turning our military into mercenaries for Saudi Arabia...he has done this in our name...You are all mad that somehow this is my fault or Biden supporters fault...but it isn't. The fact is a primary is to pick a candidate who can win a general...nothing more.t is a contest...one will win and the others will lose. I will vote for any candidate who wins the nomination. I do not support Warren in the primary but she has my vote in a general. As for voter enthusiasm...well that is nonsense...that is a thinly veiled threat that if some don't get their way, they will sabotage the election as they did last time. I believe the progressive movement is dead if Trump wins. So maybe we should all put aside our rather minor differences to get rid of Trump

(10,721 posts)Especially when the field is as large as it was, including the involvement of novelty candidates who are simply quirky or uber-wealthy but have no business running. People aren't inclined to bother distinguishing between 20+ people they've never heard of, and the media gets focused on the wrong things.
Also, starting with IA and NH has always been stupid. We start with 2 states that don't remotely reflect our electorate and it has a major impact on how people campaign. It's absurd.
When he doesn't have a script to follow, Biden is lost. That wouldn't be a good look on a debate stage with Trump. Fortunately, I doubt Biden will be the nominee.

(18,486 posts)Watching people I thought were allies dismiss racism and sexism as elements in this, pointing to Obama as "proof" that discrimination is
no longer a factor in our party, claiming a virtually all-white candidate slate is no big deal and telling those of us who have a problem with it to get over it, and falling back on the Republicans old favorite "MLK said we should be judged by the content of our character so we shouldn't be talking about race" dodge is what I'd expect from the FOX crowd, not a group of progressive Democrats.
How disappointing.
