A red state & blue state. My best guess though they may start out with small states for a reason.

This may be unorthodox but what about DC or Puerto Rico? I'd be happy with either one as a pick first state.

On edit: DC probably isn't a good idea since they probably already know all the candidates but I'm thinking of places that should be states.

It's lily white NH instance of being the first primary in the nation (by statute no less), that has skewed the early contest.

Delaware, with blacks making up slightly more thn 20% of its population, is better in terms of black representation, though that state's population is only 8% Hispanic.

Delaware has the advantage of being a VERY small state, too, which would make campaigning cheaper for everyone, and would enable newcomers a chance to get a lot of attention on limited budgets.

Which is why a larger AA population in a small state would be advantageous if we're trying to get candidates representative of Democratic Party demographics.

....they more closely reflect the demographics of the Democratic Party and the country.

Plus both Iowa and New Hampshire have more registered republicans than Democrats, surely all those republicans have some effect on the Democrats in those states.
