Bloomberg unveils sweeping gun control plan

Politico

Michael Bloomberg rolled out his gun control platform Thursday afternoon in Aurora, Colo. — the town where an armed man opened fire in a movie theater in 2012, killing 12 people.

The billionaire businessman is calling for stronger background checks and permit requirements, aspirations that for years have stymied Democrats searching for bipartisan congressional support and coming up short.

Since entering the Democratic presidential primary last month, Bloomberg has been amplifying his gun control record as he seeks to win over a party that hasn’t settled on a frontrunner. Gun control is a popular issue with the left flank of the party that is otherwise distrustful of the former New York City mayor’s vast wealth — an estimated $54.7 billion — and routine financial support of Republicans over the years.

Bloomberg calls for a background check system that entails permits for all new gun buyers, police notification when owners have been prohibited from holding firearms and a crackdown on unlicensed sellers at gun shows or online, according to campaign officials. As mayor in 2009, Bloomberg oversaw a sting operation at gun shows around the country and turned over illegally bought firearms to federal authorities.

The minimum. No mention of a AWB, gun manufacturer liability.

Otherwise, people would start suing automakers, liquor & beer, food, etc, for the damages they cause. And you know how litigious we are!
Everyone KNOWS a gun will kill or injure you if you use it illegally to shoot someone. I guess gun mfgs could just start putting a warning label on them; "Warning. This weapon is only to be used for legal self defense and sport shooting". Liability removed!

Targeted liability would equal unfair treatment of a legal product. Its nice to discuss it and all, but in reality the Congress would probably never pass any of that anyway Even a Democrat controlled one

Gun control is an issue of values and intent. The point of the Act is that the manufacturer can NEVER be liable for the use of their product. This creates privileged, protected class. Scrap it.

and anyone who says it does is being either dishonest or disingenuous.

The law still allows for damages for defective products and several companies have settle lawsuits for bad components.

No company is responsible for ILLEGAL use of their products. The PLCAA was enacted to prevent litigation-induced bankruptcy.

If I drive my Mustang into a crowd of people - Ford is NOT at fault.
If a tire comes off and my Mustang is out-of-control - Ford is at fault.

Beat someone to death with a hammer - Not Craftsman's fault.
Head of hammer flys off - Craftsman's fault

Most anything in a home or car (even the car) can be used to injure/kill someone. The problem is with the person not the device.

when they argued to SCOTUS that the PLCAA had a considerably wider application than bankruptcy?

They're being sued for a crime committed with a weapon that they didn't produce.

Lanza was found to have a .223-caliber Bushmaster XM15-E2S rifle, a 10mm Glock 20SF handgun, and a 9mm SIG Sauer P226 handgun. Outside the school, an Izhmash Saiga-12 shotgun.

That's a little like me suing Chevrolet because a Ford ran over me.
