Bernie Sanders campaign parts ways with staffer after report of homophobic and anti-Semitic tweets

CNN

(CNN)Bernie Sanders' campaign has parted ways with a newly hired staffer after a conservative website unearthed a series of tweets allegedly from the staffer that contained anti-Semitic and homophobic language.

Darius Khalil Gordon announced Wednesday that he had taken a job with the campaign as the deputy director of constituency organizing. On Thursday, the Washington Free Beacon, a conservative website, reported that Gordan had sent tweets in 2010, 2011 and 2012 that contained offensive, anti-Semitic and homophobic slurs.

The tweets were no longer available on Gordon's page after the Free Beacon's post, and Gordon's Twitter account has since been deactivated.

The Sanders campaign told CNN that Gordon is no longer on the job.

"He is no longer with the campaign and we wish him the best," said Mike Casca, a campaign spokesman.

They wish "the best" to a homophobic anti-Semite?

However, it didn't until people blew the whistle on that poor choice. Was there nobody who checked that person's Twitter feed before the hiring?

These days, it's easy to find out where someone is coming from. Everyone is on Twitter, pretty much. Or Facebook. Or somewhere else. People who are trying to make a name for themselves use their real names, too.

So, why was that person hired in the first place? Sure, we'll vet such people for a campaign after the fact, but mistakes like that are harmful to any campaign.

It makes me wonder. It really does.

If that was anything like the reason he was hired, the campaign will fail miserably.

It is interesting, though, that Mayor Pete's climb in the polls is attracting the attention of the second and third place candidates, isn't it. It looks like they're getting worried, and well they might worry.

Look! Just over there! Who is that new person on the horizon? It's Bloomberg, rolling coal as he barrels into the race in his monster truck!

Is it that the knew about the tweets but were OK with them? In which case they're complicit.

Or didn't they do the proper background checks? In which case they're incompetent.

Neither option inspires much confidence in the campaign, or how Bernie Sanders (I-VT) would staff a White House.
