The fluctuating support for Medicare for All (or - How industry shapes public opinion)

Last year about this time, public support for M4A was around 70%.

https://thehill.com/hilltv/what-americas-thinking/412545-70-percent-of-americans-support-medicare-for-all-health-care

Now? Support has dropped considerably.

https://slate.com/business/2019/10/medicare-for-all-is-getting-less-popular.html

Why? Well if you ask me, it's because healthcare industry leaders see the writing on the wall, and as a result, poured money into the pockets of their friends and enablers in DC and the media.

https://www.gq.com/story/lobbyists-medicare-for-all-op-eds

My preferred candidate's plan is probably closer to Biden's than Bernie's, but we need to be clear about how this works, and not lose sight of the long term goal here. And that goal is M4A (universal healthcare/single payer system).

Just wanted to share a little lesson in how this shit works for anyone who needs it. Not that I think most of DU needs it, but... well, it's an election year, so....

I keep saying I get it - and I'm not bashing Biden's plan.

What I am alarmed by is his comment that Americans don't want M4A. When he says shit like that, he is selling their spin.

It doesn't matter if the polls show that, NOW, after a year of bombardment from the industry - we all know very well how this system that is in place works. And we should NOT be feeding into the industry's lies because that will only hinder real progress.

He can defend his plan without doing that. If he can't, he needs to learn how.

either support or supported universal or single payer health coverage in theory have fallen prey to industry money/media influence. It goes beyond understanding and dealing with political risk. We have folks here who actually believe single payer can never work in theory ... though most of the rest of the developed nations around the globe have it. Must be "American exceptionalism".

In the end, you can only achieve what you strive for by actually striving for it.

WEALTHcare industry leaders poured money into the pockets of their friends and enablers in DC and the media. BILLIONS spent on propaganda, lobbyists, buying congresspeople.

They will do the same to fight this tooth and nail every time it's brought up - to protect their PROFITS - at the expense of American health and lives. Corprats are psychopathic entities.

Read 'Deadly Spin' by Wendell Potter. He used to work for Aetna and became a whistleblower. This was during the time ACA was being worked out. He's got the inside scoop about how Big Insurance, Big Pharma, and Big Medical WEALTHcare industry fought ACA and particularly the public option. THEY are why it wasn't in there to begin with.

Whether people like it or not.

Thank you for pointing this out. People tend to forget that it's not what's right and fair that will win, it's not what SHOULD win in a decent society that will win. It is whatever wins the public opinion war, and that ain't a fair fight.

But ANY* of our candidates will be a damn sight better than what is on the other side, so we need to figure out how to get public opinion on the side of the person on the Democratic line for president in the GE. Even if that person doesn't have the most perfect possible policies.

* Any, excepting one that I know of, and that one doesn't have a snowball's chance ... not sure why that one is even still in the race.

Trying for nothing other than what they allow us to have does nothing to overcome the problem. Dems need to be out there showing people how the industry is poisoning the well. I don't see that happening though. Do you?

However it's possible to acknowledge that while a few people do have actually good plans they want to keep, we need to work toward a system where it's not just the lucky few who have access to that kind of care.

Lets be honest. The healthcare lobbyists aren't stupid. They give money to both parties.

So when someone sees an Elected Democrat putting his name on an anti M4A opinion piece that was actually written by lobbyists, that has an effect.

When a major Democratic candidate says the party isn't ready for M4A, he's not talking about the voters.
