'We Were Proven Right,' Says AOC After Amazon Expands in New York Without Taking Billions in Public Cash
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested the Trump administration "focus more on cutting public assistance to billionaires instead of poor families" after news broke Friday that Amazon was expanding its presence in New York City without the state giving the company billions in tax incentives.
(snip)
The decision by the online giant to lease 335,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan and employee 1,500 employees in the consumer and advertising departments was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The announcement came roughly 10 months after Amazon announced it was ditching its widely condemned plan to locate a second headquarters site in Long Island City, Queensa plan for which New York state would have given the online giant nearly $3 billion in tax incentives.
Ocasio-Cortez was among that plan's most vocal critics, asking at the time, "Why should corporations that contribute nothing to the pot be in a position to take billions from the public?"

(112,202 posts)Believing that getting 1,500 jobs is an accomplishment when Amazon was prepared to bring 25,000 jobs isn't anything that Bernie or AOC should boast about. Their attempt to spin it is humorous though.

(260 posts)1500 new jobs, at no expense to the state or city, sounds pretty good to me. The cost to the city and state of tax incentives in Amazon's original demand of 3 billion for supposedly 23,500 more jobs would work out to about $127,659/job. Seems like you should be celebrating reduce government spending at the public's expense, why aren't you?

(112,202 posts)From my perspective it looks like they did absolutely nothing. Taking credit for doing nothing is outlandish.
I don't think you are in the position about what I should or should not be celebrating, nor am I overly concerned about what your opinion is. Have a good day.

(2,706 posts)If a corporation or millionaire make $, they should pay a flat %. No deductions.
This prevents Amazon paying $0 in taxes.

(112,202 posts)If they are imposed only on corporations or millionaires then those affected will be correct in stating that Democrats are targeting the wealthy--that isn't a great way to win an election since the wealthy can pour plenty of money into the opposition campaign and advertisements to fight such a proposal. There will be plenty of discussion as to whether those taxes are fair and public opinion still leans in favor of doing what is fair since most Americans still believe that there is mobility in their social class (even though the evidence contradicts it).
Flat taxes are notoriously regressive and in the past those suggestions were made exclusively by Republicans. I don't think we (Democrats) want to go there.

(2,706 posts)With a wealth tax or by income. Thats what they will say anyway.
If you make over a certain sum, say 1 million in income, yes you should have no deductions.
It should never be that one can pay $0 in taxes and make millions in income.

(112,202 posts)but also have over $1 million in expenses the taxpayer must still pay a flat tax and the deductions are not allowed? That doesn't sound fair to me.

(31,261 posts)What I would do is allow small business owners to file their business taxes seperate my from their personal taxes and take the type of writeoffs that corporations take, that would be a boon for small business and employment.
A corporation that runs up loses on it's way to being profitable should be able to write those loses off against revenue. That often results in companies paying no taxes on gross profits and as a result, those gross profits get recorded as net profits. If you take that away then there is no reason to invest in new plants, equipment and research unless the investment is 100% guaranteed to produce a large profit immediately, a presupposition that is insane. I would expand business writeoffs to allow sole proprietorships and industrial LLCs to do the identical writeoffs that corporations do, such a change would allow those smaller companies to have a better chance at surviving and retaining and creating jobs.

(21,466 posts)as a victory because I believe she was right in the first place to oppose corporate extortion, even though it meant that Amazon pulled out. I like AOC.
But I hoped for more honesty from her. This office which will employ around 1500 people is not related to the.deal for 25,000 jobs that Amazon backed away from. It was planned long ago as a separate, different part of rhe business.
It would be a victory only if Amazon had reconsidered the deal that it dropped earlier and accepted the non extortion terms. But they didn't, so she should not spin it as if they did.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
The spin is why AOC is already drawing several challengers for the next primary.

(21,466 posts)I really like AOC and believe she can grow into a good leader.in the party. We need fresh, young people for the future.
I respecr our older, experienced members, especially Pelosi.who is, thank God, just what we need in these times. But I grew up in a more liberal time.thsn today, when there was even such a thing as liberal Republicsns, before the RW weeded them out. I have seen ALL.of us, as a nation, grow more conservative.
But since I have lived through more liberal times, AOC does not seem as radical to me as she does to some people. I welcome fresh new progressive ideas and people into the party.even.though I am a bit more moderate myself.
Young people make mistakes and grow from them. I think AOC has a lot to offer now and more in the future as she gains more experience.
