WBUR Poll: Buttigieg, Biden Top N.H. Primary Race, While Warren's Support SlipsPete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and former Vice President Joe Biden are leading the crowded Democratic presidential primary race in New Hampshire, according to a new WBUR poll. With the first-in-the-nation primary less than nine weeks away, Buttigieg is running slightly ahead of Biden, followed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who is in fourth place.
It's the latest poll suggesting that Buttigieg has real momentum in Iowa and New Hampshire, home of the first presidential caucuses and primary. According to the WBUR survey (topline, crosstabs) of 442 likely New Hampshire Democratic primary voters, 18% say Buttigieg is their top choice. The poll was conducted from Dec. 3 to Dec. 8 and has a margin of error of 4.7%. Meanwhile, Biden, after slipping in the polls following some shaky debate performances, is solidly in contention in the Granite State, just one point behind Buttigieg. But the poll suggests the first-in-the-nation primary race continues to be highly unsettled.

(59,507 posts)It is also interesting to look at the timing of the polling December 3-8. At the beginning of that interval Biden had started his Iowa trip. Early on much of the coverage was the incident with the man spouting Fox News points on his son. On December 5th, he was endorsed by Kerry, who joined him on December 6 in Iowa. Biden wrapped for the Iowa malarkey tour on December 7.
Biden came to NH on December 8 for an event in Nashua, NH. (Using google to check dates on this time line, I found that CSPAN recorded that event - https://www.c-span.org/video/?467143-1/joe-biden-campaigns-nashua-hampshire
My point, I would love to see the day by day estimates (yes, I KNOW the variance for them would be huge as they each would have a pretty small sample size). Note that virtually all of those polled were polled before there was LOCAL news coverage of his NH events, which appeared to be very well attended. (That coverage was excellent for Biden - here's one of the examples - https://www.wmur.com/article/wmur-2020-politics-podcast-the-trail-episode-64/30173111 (From December 9, after the poll was done.)
Just from the numbers from this and other polls, it is clear that the race is very close between at least 3 of the 4 top candidates and all 4 could easily move to the lead over the next several weeks.

That is, unless Buttgieg suddenly looks much more electable in polls of other states including SC, and national polls.

I am glad to see that Mayor Pete is showing some resilience. It seems that Bloomberg is hurting him more than the other candidates.
