'You have absolutely zero power' -- I was a McKinsey consultant like Pete Buttigieg

Here’s what this debate is missing, and why the coverage is so off-beam.

Buttigieg was not a McKinsey director, partner or manager. Like me, he was just an associate.

Young consultants who join McKinsey straight out of graduate school are much like young lawyers who join a top law firm straight out of law school.

You have absolutely zero power and very little influence. You are mainly there as billable hours.

You are allocated to work for individual partners on individual projects.

You don’t choose the clients, the partners or the projects.

Remember, he was only there for 2-1/2 years right out of college, he didn't exactly make a career out of it.

Bashing him for those 2-1/2 years in his early 20s is ludicrous.

Also, that is a pretty shitty attitude towards the human beings that do the tough, grueling, necessary, and thankless work like ‘scrubbing toilets at MickeyDs’.

Come to think of it, I actually would be more impressed with Mayor Pete if he had scrubbed toilets rather than do some bullshit job like consulting.

As a highly educated young white man just out of college, he had a lot more choice in the matter of where he could work, unlike that individual who may be scrubbing toilets at MickeyDs.

He chose to work at McKinsey.

You are so right: new associates do grunt work and research. They do not write recommendations for clients and do not have a say in which accounts they get assigned.

What people are missing is how hard it is to get a job with McKinsey. It's known for being one of the most highly selective employers in the world. The fact that Buttigieg was hired by the firm is an amazing accomplishment that people are using to bash him.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
