Former Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday sought to draw parallels between the results of the United Kingdoms general election and the 2020 White House race arguing that British Prime Minister Boris Johnsons resounding victory should warn Democrats against veering too far left in their fight to defeat President Donald Trump.
Boris Johnson is winning in a walk, Biden, a leading Democratic presidential candidate, told attendees of a campaign fundraiser in San Francisco. The prime ministers Conservative Party captured an overwhelming parliamentary majority in Thursdays election, taking dozens of seats in Britains House of Commons from opposition leader Jeremy Corbyns Labour Party.

(13,431 posts)Pretty much any other leader for Labour who advocated the same positions as Corbyn (except his ugly anti-semitism) would have trounced the Conservatives. Labour lost due to their leader, not their message or policies. If Labour held been led by a British version of Trudeau, Labor would have a decisive victory.

(115,832 posts)Sometimes you can hold your nose and vote for someone you don't like much if you favor their policies, and I would think that principle applies everywhere. I've often wondered whether a liberal Trump could be elected. Would we vote for a crude, nasty, boorish oaf who promised Medicare for All, free college, action on climate change, and all the other desired liberal goals over a polite, civil, likable candidate who stuck with the standard GOP platform? Do people vote for the candidate or the party?

It pains me that our leading candidate would use "winning in a walk" at a fundraiser.

(1,812 posts)The Lib Dems picked up a grand total of 11 seats ...Their leader was booted out of office .. Corbyn's Labour Party gained 32 seats in 2017 - far better than they did under the leadership of 'centrist" Ed Milliband in 2015 ... ..Why didn't Corbyn get crushed 2 years ago if the British people are so afraid of the "Far-Left" ? Corbyn botched Brexit by not taking a stand on the issue and was dogged by accusations of Anti-Semitism .

And against the populist-socialism of Jeremy Corbyn and his ilk. It is a toxic ideology that I reject completely as a third generation life-long liberal Democrat.

touting of it as "proof" that Bernie and his ideas are the only way to defeat conservatives.
But since Corbyn lost, the outcome is irrelevant because "We are not the UK."

(694 posts)The UK election has zero bearing on the upcoming US Presidential election. Two different countries, facing completely different issues.
A deeply unpopular opposition leader, with no clear policy on the most pressing issue of the day, Brexit. 37% of people that didn't vote Labour said it was because of Corbyn, and a further 20% said it was because of the lack of clarity on Brexit.
Basically nothing to do with being "too far left".

(2,343 posts)The Brexit result was a surprise (Remain was leading the polls). Later that year, Trump wins (we can all agree that was a shock!). Although Johnson was expected to win yesterday, polls showed things within reach for Labour. The results end up being a shellacking in the Tories favor!
Polling has me worried that no one truly knows where races stand anymore. Ive noticed over the last couple of years that people are quite right-lipped when it comes to politics. Its harder to know what people are thinking. With so many short triggers on the people who are politically passionate, those that arent super engaged just keep their mouths shut. They dont want to get into political debate. Therefore, until they vote, we dont know what people are thinking.
Not having a good handle on what the electorate is thinking has me very worried, and yesterdays UK election didnt help ease my concern!

The right in the UK won the election but may lose Scotland and Northern Ireland. Way too much is already made of that short term victory by Johnson.

(14,565 posts)Anyone who disputes the notion of electability might as well be reincarnated as a jack o lantern.
Swing states are no longer swing states when our candidate is shoving from the far left. I have mentioned this many times: Swing states are ones with an ideological breakdown roughly the same as the nation, which means 9% more self-identified conservatives than liberals, like 36-27. You can see right there the deficit we face. No margin for error. We are already in need of left-leaning moderates to barely push us over the top. I have no idea why it isn't obvious than when you nominate someone too far left, that 36% pushes upward toward 50% range in a hurry. It simply has far less ground to cover than the 27%.
A male moderate has more voters who will seriously consider him, than any other combo from our side. I'd be thrilled with a female liberal but I'm not dense enough not to recognize all the doors slammed in front of her.

The thoroughness of Corbyns thrashing revived the longstanding debate within the party over just how ambitious the Democratic agenda should be, and provided fresh ammunition for the arguments of moderates who contend that if the party backs Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, the primarys leading progressives, theyll lose the Rust Belt and perhaps even elsewhere.....
"Corbyn was basically a satellite project for Bernie world. If there is one lesson to be gleaned from the devastating loss across the pond, it's that we need more than just soaring rhetoric backed up by bravado of organizing, said Murshed Zaheed, a Megaphone Strategies partner and former Harry Reid aide backing Warren. We need to have leaders who have crystal-clear analysis of how to solve problems and leverage power to achieve those solutions. Corbyn never appeared to be a candidate with any sound plans on how to move U.K. forward.
Before the polls closed on Thursday, Sanders national organizing director, Claire Sandberg, had tweeted that the Bernie team says #VoteLabour with a picture attached of campaign staff. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a top congressional ally who has campaigned with Sanders in Iowa, also tweeted in support of Labour. Two 2016 aides to Sanders, Becky Bond and Zack Malitz, had traveled to London earlier this year to help the pro-Corbyn group Momentum as well.
