Bernie rescinds Cenk Uygur endorsement after backlash

Politico

By JEREMY B. WHITE 12/13/2019 05:01 PM EST Updated 12/13/2019 06:08 PM EST

Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Friday rescinded his day-old endorsement of a California congressional candidate — an extraordinary concession to a furious backlash from local groups over liberal journalist Cenk Uygur’s history of homophobic and sexist comments.

“Cenk has been a longtime fighter against the corrupt forces in our politics, and he's inspired people all across the country,” Sanders said in a statement. “However, our movement is bigger than any one person. I hear my grassroots supporters who were frustrated and understand their concerns.”

Sanders’ abrupt reversal represented a misstep for Vermont senator and presidential candidate. The California arm of his campaign was warned about Uygur's past comments and urged the national campaign to stay out of the race, sources told POLITICO.

But Sanders endorsed Uygur regardless. His intervention created turmoil on the ground in California’s 25th Congressional district, a seat that Democrats flipped in 2018 but is now vacant after Democrat Katie Hill resigned amid allegations of sexual impropriety.

The endorsement was refused... it wasn't a "retraction". Cenk gave him "cover".

Bernie didn't take-back something of value or something that was wanted or desired by Cenk. (If it was something that Cenk actually wanted, I guess he would have needed to give him a horse.)

In any case, Cenk's "refusal" of the endorsement make it easy for Bernie. What's needed now is for Bernie to condemn Cenk for his disgusting comments and defense/advocation of bestiality. And I must say, Cenk's "whinnying" horse-impersonation... trying to convey a sexually satisfied horse... was VOMIT INDUCING.

The BS campaign has screwed-the-pooch (so to speak) and pardon the intentional pun.

Here's the thing. Bernie had (still has, I suppose) the opportunity to make the right decision. It's a test of leadership and the ability to do the right thing and set aside all other pressures. There is really only ONE thing to do, and he still hasn't done it. That doesn't speak very well about what kind of leader he'd be.

I hope he will pass this test, but every indication is that he won't.

Cenk is disgusting. A misogynist and apparently he's an advocate/defender of bestiality. That's just sick! Perverted. Twisted. Just the sight of Cenk makes me wont to vomit!

I suspect this will be buried in the background noise before long, especially with impeachment at the forefront at the moment.

If Sanders was going to make a questionable move like this, he probably picked a good time to do so. Plus, to his campaign's credit, they didn't double down on the dumb and make it worse. As I noted in another response, I'm actually kind of surprised that they recognized it for what it was and bailed out.

But Sanders endorsed Uygur regardless. His intervention created turmoil on the ground in California’s 25th Congressional district, a seat that Democrats flipped in 2018 but is now vacant after Democrat Katie Hill resigned amid allegations of sexual impropriety.“

Bernie was warned. Did it any way. Only retracted after groundswell of distaste.

He has done the right thing and the only thing that he could in the face of pressure — now - but most certainly not always!

He may have guessed that his supporters would blindly back Cenk after Bernie endorsed. One person right here on DU implied that he or she would definitely vote for Cenk because Bernie endorsed. But it looks like Bernie ran into a firestorm from his California supporters and started trying to find a way to undo the damage. The endorsement is going to stick with him and other people in the democratic primary should raise the issue next week during the debate.

something. This time it was an endorsement. Before that, it was hiring someone without vetting and then having to fire that person before he even did anything.

Why would we talk about plagiarism. I don't think Senator Sanders has been accused of that. I have no idea what plagiarism you're talking about.

"When Biden was confronted on multiple occasions he claimed received a videotape of the speech and permission from Denis Healey of the British Labor Party. When Healey’s office made it clear the story wasn’t true Biden reluctantly acknowledged that he had lied on both counts. Eventually Biden even admitted the claims he made regarding his wife’s attendance at college were also untrue. The New York Times continued to review tape of Biden’s previous speeches and determined that Biden regularly lifted speeches from John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Hubert Humphrey."

I think the speech plagerized from the Healey speech was the reason he dropped out the first time? or was the second?

His personal baggage and difficult personality and dubious positions in the past are all reasons not to support him as a candidate, but as a pundit he often makes wise policy statements. I tuned him out years ago because I couldn't stand him, and it was infuriating to me because otherwise he voices many of the same perspectives I have about politics.

He's an infuriating and insufficient person and does not have the temperament for congressional office.

My hope for him always is that he overcomes his repulsive arrogance and actually addresses his errors from the past rather than sweeping them under the rug or doing blanket disclaimers about past statements.

Still, my heart sank when I heard that he was going to run for this seat. I don't think he is congressional material.

We have had enough of that charlatan in the White House who is never wrong and always perfect. We need a president like Bernie who listens and who is willing to change and/or reverse policies as the need arises. He got a bit ahead of himself with that endorsement out of loyalty to a long-time supporter. But he listened to his friends and supporters who told him it was a mistake and he reversed himself. Good for you Bernie. I will be supporting you in the upcoming Nevada caucuses.

Loyalty trumps all? Sexism and bigotry do not matter as long as there is loyalty? So it's not a problem that he rescinded the endorsement only because other people had an issue with it? The things Cenk said as recently as 2013 and 2016 were over the top vile. I mean, really over top nasty, vulgar and vile. I know he apologized but he lied in his apology and said it happened when he was a republican trying to minimize the severity of the comments. Also, he doesn't seem remorseful since yesterday he blamed democrats and the media for the foulness that came out of his own mouth.
