How Warren Bulldozed Hillary on the Economy

The Massachusetts senator pressured Clinton to consult a list of liberal academics.

https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2019/12/19/elizabeth-warren-hillary-clinton-economy-087346

OK, so it's Politico. But there is still some interesting information here. And Hillary listened.

...
Warren’s initial list in 2014 and the ensuing influence campaign over administration personnel, according to interviews with more than 20 people involved in the process, offers the clearest possible window into how Warren would staff her own administration – and just how sharply a Warren administration’s economic team would depart from recent Democratic administrations and those of her rivals such as former Vice President Joe Biden.

The two-year campaign to mold the would-be Hillary Clinton administration is also a case study in Warren’s theory of power, an approach her aides and allies sometimes refer to as the “inside-outside game” – combining tough, often hyperbolic rhetoric to create leverage with quieter, hands-on, person-to-person outreach.
...
Warren also personally and persistently lobbied campaign chairman John Podesta, members of the transition team, and Clinton herself. When Warren visited the campaign’s Brooklyn headquarters shortly after endorsing Clinton in 2016, she insisted on a separate meeting with the campaign’s policy team.

“There were the ‘do’s and the ‘don’t’s -- do [hire] this person and don’t with this person,” recalled Podesta of their conversations in the fall of 2016. “She was more fired up about the ‘don’t’s than the ‘do’s.’” Podesta wouldn’t name names but said: “If you worked at the Obama Treasury Department or the SEC then you were probably in trouble.”
...
To the surprise of some in Warren’s orbit, Clinton’s team began proactively engaging with the people on Warren’s list -- and not just in a check-the-box fashion, according to some who were contacted.
...
In pushing for her allies to be incorporated into Clinton’s campaign, Warren began hitting the phones -- reaching out to people like Gary Gensler, Mandy Grunwald, and the few other links she had to Clinton. ...

What I find to be fascinating about this article is its detailed description of Warren's very effective "inside-outside game." I really do not believe that any other Dem candidate - and certainly NO Republican - has anything like it.

There would be plenty of bully in President Warren’s pulpit. We need that.

This should not have come as a surprise! This is who Hillary Clinton is, and why she has always been enormously liked and respected in every position she has held. She is always willing to learn on the job.

This is an interesting article, but I don't like the title. You don't have to "bulldoze" Hillary Clinton, who's always ready to listen and adjust her ideas.

4. Right. Both HRC and Warren have shown they listen. That was a big one for HRC.

6. I felt the same regarding the headline

It seemed to be more intended to sow divisions on both sides when it could have highlighted the good of both personalities.
Warren has her ideals but is a team player, Clinton is actually open to listening to the arguments of other people and can change her mind when better solutions are offered.

It would have been great to have a HRC/Warren ticket. Warren said she would have said yes. I think HRC probably figured a two woman ticket wouldn't fly and she is probably right. I think we can do it now. Warren/Harris.

it was one of the most likable moments I've ever witnessed in politics. They were out there laughing and engaging with the audience and having the time of their lives. The media paid attention for about a minute, then it was back to Trump's dystopian rallies.

7. Yes, thanks for the reminder. I see the same with Harris and Warren. A fav was Beto and Harris.

There is a picture I love with the two standing together. I always thought a Warren/Beto was ideal in symbolic in polar opposite. Our Democrats like each other. We do not need media and Putin to create animosity that isn't.

10. Warren found a receptive audience in Clinton.

It’s one of the reasons I am such a big fan of Clinton. She is the most prepared person when she walks into a room. She is also open to listening, learning, and changing. That is very rare in DC. I think Warren is very similar in that respect.
