The lead moderator, Judy Woodruff, opened things by immediately asking candidates to address the historic news of the week: the impeachment of President Donald Trump. It set the tone and context for a nearly three-hour discussion of the need to restore the White House with honor, and which candidate could best help those in need.
The issue that first seemed to spark the most passion was candidates expressing competitive urgency on climate change. Politicos moderator Tim Alberta was chided by Bernie Sanders for what was deemed a poorly thought out question.

NOT WINNERS
Its not really fair to call these candidates losers as no one really stepped in it. But the following candidates did not cover themselves in the same glory that the three above did.

Joe Biden
Uncle Joe was Uncle Joe. There were no serious gaffes and he shed his affable nature now and again to chide his fellow competitors and even interrupt. But while specifically challenged the idea that he is pitching a return to normal, it is hard to not see Biden as campaigning to return to a time that is too far gone. Joe Biden is the rearview mirror candidate, and thats a tough sell for people are more eager to look forward.

Senator, with all respect, this question is about race. Can you answer the question as it was asked?
[audience howls with derisive laughter]

(1,701 posts)Sen. Sanders low moment was when the he dogged race (after doing the same with transgender issues).
Finally a moderators interjected: Senator, with all respect, this question is about race. Can you answer the question as it was asked?
And the audience lost it. He's finished.

Joe Biden: I'm not sure whether it was the smaller number of candidates on stage or a renewed confidence in his status as the front-runner in the race. But, what I am sure of is that -- from beginning to end -- this was the former vice president's best debate, by a lot. His answer on the need to build consensus and work with Republicans -- noting that he more than anyone else on the stage had reason not to like Republicans who have spent attacking he and his son, Hunter, for months -- was his best answer in any debate. Biden's response to questions about his age -- he said age brought him much-needed experience and wisdom -- was self assured and solid. Biden was simply more confident and competent Thursday night -- just look at how he directly took on Sen. Bernie Sanders on "Medicare for All" -- than he has been in prior debates.

Losers:
Bernie Sanders: My issue with the Vermont senator in this debate is that no matter what question he was asked, he seemed to give the same answer: Millionaires and billionaires are destroying this country. Which, if you support Sanders, is plenty good for you! But, Sanders has to figure out how to expand his coalition. And I don't think he did that in this debate. Also, his attempt at a joke in response to Barack Obama's assessment that the country needed younger, more diverse leaders -- "and I'm white too" -- fell very flat. Also, he got shut down by one of the debate moderators for trying to pivot from a question about race to talk about the climate crisis.

(6,280 posts)According to the pundits in the mainstream media that I have been watching, it seems they all tend to disagree with Colby's opinion of Joe Biden. The only network I did not check was faux news. Maybe that's where Colby got his information and formed his opinion. I can't say for sure, but I do know it was not from CNN or MSNBC who, almost to a person agreed that Joe Biden had a great night, as I'm sure Colby also knows. Willful ignorance is not a becoming trait.
