Scoop: Buttigieg fundraiser dangles influence for cash

Seriously, has there been a campaign that angled so quickly and shamelessly for oligarch money as Buttigieg's?

In a recent email exchange with a wealthy prospective donor, a top fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg made an offer that was unusually blunt — even by modern pay-to-play standards.

What they're saying: "If you want to get on the campaign's radar now before he is flooded with donations after winning Iowa and New Hampshire, you can use the link below for donations," the fundraiser, H.K. Park, wrote in an email to the donor, which was reviewed by Axios.

<snip>

Why it matters: Brendan Fischer at the campaign finance watchdog the Campaign Legal Center said the Buttigieg fundraiser's pitch "is an example of a campaign offering potential donors an opportunity to buy influence."

<snip>

The prospective donor was also disturbed by the solicitation. "It's very telling and concerning that one of the campaign's major bundlers would talk like that," said the donor, who asked not to be named.

Typical russian style propaganda. It's not about Buttigieg vs. Warren or anyone else. This is about pitting Democrat against Democrat. We don't seem to have learned that lesson yet.

I know some very wealthy people that despise the fuckface in the White House.

One of them said, “I like Biden. I like my Democrats corrupt.” He would probably go for Buttigieg, but if it’s Warren or Sanders, he’s going to vote for fuckface. Bottom line is they want billionaire friendly.

It was casual lunchtime banter. I have never disclosed my political leanings other than to say fuckface sucks. Hedge fund guys probably don’t want to hear about a Bernie supporter among their ranks! Therefore I never make political donations as I have to clear them through compliance and thus disclose who I’m donating to.

...he grew up in. I think by corrupt, he means taking donations from billionaires who don’t usually do that out of kindness. Now this guy is no billionaire, but he does have a good chance at becoming one if our strategies pan out. He does have a 20mm Manhattan townhouse fwiw.

...revolving door/politics to lobbying is fine by him as long as no new taxes on the rich (no large healthcare accomplishments are made involving such taxes etc) are enacted and we can be a respected country on the world stage again. Biden can manage that. My guess is he actually favors Bloomberg now actually.

He grew up in a communist satellite state and has some reflexive bad reactions to anything sounding like socialism.

....NO single person, no matter how rich one is, can give more than $2,800 to any candidate. Believe me, with a candidate eventually winding up with $100 million or more, a $2,800 contribution isn't going to buy much "influence", if any of our candidates even care about "influence".

I find it interesting that as he rises in the polls the attacks in the press and by campaigns have shifted from Biden to Buttigieg.

....campaign finance laws. And even if we did, that won't affect "bundlers".

To be honest, I don't understand the problem people have with "bundlers". Essentially all they do is get LEGAL contributions from people and deliver them to the campaigns WITH all the required information from the contributors (name, address, occupation, employer)

As far as Super PACs are concerned, EVERY one of our candidates have them (except maybe Bloomberg and Steyer, who are pretty much self-funding) whether they admit it or not.

Bundlers are just people that go out and ask others to donate the $2,800 maximum they are allowed.

And I don't believe Buttigieg accepts money from dark money PACs, so you're wrong to bring them up in a discussion about Buttigieg's financing as well.
