I still believe in the exceptional idea written into our founding documents: that all men and women are created equal. Weve never lived up to it, but weve never abandoned it and every generation has worked to make it real for more people.
The seismic events that shaped my youth the assassinations of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, the 16th Street Church bombing and the Orangeburg massacre, the burning and subsequent occupation of my city, Wilmington, Del., by the National Guard seared into me that the struggle against hate, injustice and institutional racism must be the unrelenting work of all our lives.....
The Department of Justice will once again protect the fundamental right to vote. And Ill lead the fight to restore the Voting Rights Act and pass laws that make it easier for people to exercise their rights. But this work can only start once we kick Donald Trump out of the Oval Office.
We must resolve that 2020 will be the year that South Carolinians and Americans across the country stand up to continue the fight for equal rights and equal access to opportunity. I know we can do it, because Ive seen what this nation can accomplish when we stand together and stand for our highest ideals.

(47,496 posts)that are important to Democratic voters, as are all our excellent candidates. I don't think any one candidate owns any particular issue that Democrats care about. And I don't think Joe Biden needed for Klobuchar or anyone else to remind him that we have serious voting and election problems in this country.
What we don't need right now is petty bickering among ourselves. Unity of purpose and vision will help us save our democracy. You can promote your candidate choice without tearing down another.

U.S. District Court Judge Loretta Biggs decision was released Tuesday and prevents North Carolina from requiring voters to provide identification starting in 2020. The Republican leaders of the state House and Senate, however, have asked North Carolinas Department of Justice to appeal.
The federal court advised last week that Biggs would formally block the photo ID requirement until a lawsuit filed by state NAACP and others is resolved. Her decision provided insight into why she blocked the law, which she said was similar to a 2013 law that a federal appeals court struck down in 2016.
That court said the photo ID and other voter restrictions were approved with intentional racial discrimination in mind, and Biggs said the newest version of the law was no different in that respect.
North Carolina has a sordid history of racial discrimination and voter suppression stretching back to the time of slavery, through the era of Jim Crow, and, crucially, continuing up to the present day, Biggs wrote.
