Biden rips 'white man's culture,' regrets Anita Hill hearing

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden condemned "a white man's culture" Tuesday night as he lashed out against violence against women and, more specifically, lamented his role in the Supreme Court confirmation hearings that undermined Anita Hill's credibility nearly three decades ago.

Biden, a Democratic presidential prospect who often highlights his white working-class roots, said Hill, who is African-American, should not have been forced to face a panel of "a bunch of white guys."

"To this day I regret I couldn't come up with a way to give her the kind of hearing she deserved," he said, echoing comments he delivered last fall as the nation debated sexual misconduct allegations against Brett Kavanaugh amid his Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

Later in his Tuesday remarks, Biden called on Americans to "change the culture" that dates back centuries and allows pervasive violence against women. "It's an English jurisprudential culture, a white man's culture. It's got to change," Biden said.

did something wrong is needed to get this behind him and allow him to speak of the good things he did relative to women's issues.

He was the Chair of the committee. He had the power to unilaterally call for more hearings -- and there were a small number of Democrats calling on him doing just that. Here is Kerry's 1991 Senate floor statement - Kerry was not on Judiciary Committee. https://www.c-span.org/video/?c4751436/senator-kerry-1991 (I have the TV on and just listened to Biden's statement. That statement speaking of how unfair the hearing was and wishing he could have done something would make sense for Kerry and others like Senator Boxer, then in the House to make condemning what she went through. Both tried to demand better -- and obviously did succeed. The differences are Biden had the power and didn't really try.

A real mea culpa would be a deep, honest look at what he did and what he did not do - sins of commission and sins of omission - if you want. Here, he argues he voted against Thomas and a statement that the hearing should have been fairer to Hill. What is lacking is taking responsibility for his large role in that hearing.

The interesting thing here is why he can't REALLY take responsibility. It is embarrassing when the chair of the committee says he wishes there was something he could have done.

Note - this does not mean that I am 100% ruling him out as my primary choice, though in all honesty it was one reason I ruled him out in 2008. A then more current reason was that I was unimpressed with how he ran the SFRC. I actually thought Lugar did a better job (other than the terrible Bolton hearings) - though obviously I was happy the Democrats won the Senate back in 2006. It was very annoying that he cut everyone else off as their time expired and then HE stated his view of that exchange. (At the time, it looked like he wanted his sound clips for political purposes, though it might be he is simply gregarious. )
