Buttigieg critiques Biden's 'judgment' on Iraq War vote

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg on Sunday called former Vice President Joe Biden's vote to authorize the Iraq War part of the nation's "worst foreign policy decision" of the millennial mayor's lifetime.

Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, was responding to a question about how his foreign policy experience measured up to others' in the Democratic race, specifically Biden, who was a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when the U.S. went to war.

"This is an example of why years in Washington is not always the same thing as judgment," Buttigieg said while recording the program "Iowa Press" on Iowa Public Television, according to a transcript. "He supported the worst foreign policy decision made by the United States in my lifetime, which was the decision to invade Iraq."

"It's certainly a question that reflects on foreign policy judgment at a time like this when it's so precarious for the people of the U.S.," Buttigieg told reporters after a campaign event in Knoxville, Iowa. "Obviously, my judgment is different when it comes to a lot of these issues."

Biden's campaign had no comment on Buttigieg's remarks.

This NEVER HAPPENED thank god, but we lived with it for over a year.

And again, even with that, even though I was LOUDLY ANTI that war, even though I wanted to PUNCH Hannity in the FACE when he would POUND on his desk and DEMAND we have that war that he was UNWILLING to fight in, even though all that, I would NEVER use that vote as a litmus test that could reelect someone who not only WANTS to torture children but who IS TORTURING CHILDREN RIGHT FUCKING NOW!

It was a bad vote on info that was clearly being trumped up for the purpose of war. I remember the months leading up to this, listening to the news every morning with mounting dismay.

But almost everyone did it. Even Colin Powell sacrificed his integrity for it. And almost everyone regrets it now. We should not be hobbling our Dems during the primary. Anyone of three or four could become our nominee.

Mon Dec 30, 2019, 07:55 PM

And it was vividly clear at the time that the Bush administration didn't just want 'leverage', they intended to invade.

Do you know how many murderous dictators there are around the world? Do you think Dick Cheney gave two craps about any dead Iraqis? Cheney was out to make his fortune on the spoils of war, and Bush was his little puppet. It's no coincidence that we attacked a murderous dictator who had a whole lot of oil in his country.

And do you know how many people were murdered after this particular dictator was taken down and could no longer protect them? He may have been awful, but he maintained a balance between the factions.

Many many thousands of Iraqis - and Americans - have lost their lives because of this vote. And it continues. I have students in my high school classes who are Iraqi refugees who fled the country after their fathers and uncles were murdered because they were working with the US to rebuild the country, and then we pulled out.

The invasion was the most horrific and destructive mess and it all could have been predicted and prevented.

that doesn't change the fact that leading "foreign policy" Democrats voted for the IRW resolution with the intention of providing Bush with the maximum leverage to force compliance with UN resolutions, in the hopes of avoiding war. Not to advance one.

Read the speech HRC gave as she cast her vote. Her reasoning is crystal clear.

And don't forget the 500,000-1,000,000 killed in wars started by Saddam. He was hardly a stabilizing influence in the region. His was a regime based on terror.

I won't defend the cocked up mess created by Bush/Cheney for an instance. The incompetence of this administration was mind-boggling.

Powell Blames Himself, Others For Specious Iraq WMD Claims

Lie After Lie After Lie: What Colin Powell Knew Ten Years ...
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2003/feb/05/iraq.usa

Full text of Colin Powell's speech

Thank you, Mr. President.
Mr President, Mr Secretary General, distinguished colleagues, I would like to begin by expressing my thanks for the special effort that each of you made to be here today.
This is important day for us all as we review the situation with respect to Iraq and its disarmament obligations under UN security council resolution 1441.
Last November 8, this council passed resolution 1441 by a unanimous vote. The purpose of that resolution was to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction. Iraq had already been found guilty of material breach of its obligations, stretching back over 16 previous resolutions and 12 years.

Resolution 1441 was not dealing with an innocent party, but a regime this council has repeatedly convicted over the years. Resolution 1441 gave Iraq one last chance, one last chance to come into compliance or to face serious consequences. No council member present in voting on that day had any illusions about the nature and intent of the resolution or what serious consequences meant if Iraq did not comply.
And to assist in its disarmament, we called on Iraq to cooperate with returning inspectors from Unmovic and IAEA.
We laid down tough standards for Iraq to meet to allow the inspectors to do their job.
This council placed the burden on Iraq to comply and disarm and not on the inspectors to find that which Iraq has gone out of its way to conceal for so long. Inspectors are inspectors; they are not detectives.
I asked for this session today for two purposes: First, to support the core assessments made by Dr Blix and Dr El-Baradei. As Dr Blix reported to this council on January 27: "Iraq appears not to have come to a genuine acceptance, not even today, of the disarmament which was demanded of it."

90. One veteran commits suicide every 90 minutes in the US.
Mon Dec 30, 2019, 07:36 PM
Dec 2019
the new data was made available in the VA’s National Suicide Data Report, which found that, in 2016, 6,079 veterans ended their own lives compared to 6,281 in 2015. However, the suicide rate for veterans between the ages of 18 and 34 increased from 40.4 deaths per 100,000 veterans in 2015 to 45 in 2016, four times higher than that of other age groups. Notably, veterans below the age of 35 were the only age group that saw an increase in suicides from 2015 to 2016. The suicide rate was even greater for young female veterans.

...While the VA report may call the jump in young veteran suicides an “urgent crisis,” it unfortunately seems to be a crisis with no end in sight until the country is finally forced to reckon with its dark legacy of regime-change wars and military occupations around the world.

I guess it's okay to look at DU as a game, it's obvious many do, but outside of DU, we're talking human lives. Lives that may not matter to the game, but matter to someone. That includes, M4A, Iraq, etc... So many subjects that are belittled and dismissed these days, that before this primary, we agreed on or could at least discuss. We're all supposed to be on the same side, we need to start coming together and start disagreeing without being disagreeable, or we're going to throw this election to trump.

Biden has admitted his error on the vote. Pete however is trying to say that the error disqualifies him.

I would respond that though I like Pete he's the mayor of a city with a population of around 200,000. It's quite a step from there to President of the United States.

We already have one in that office who has little experience.

Yeah, it's an all volunteer military. My nephew volunteered and spent a year in Afghanistan as he put it, "helping kill people for no reason."

It's not a game. Regardless of your position in life, from a lowly voter to the President, if you supported those wars, it's not beating a dead horse to call you out on it. That horse is still alive and kicking.
