Gillibrand becomes first presidential candidate to reveal her 2018 taxes

Politico

Kirsten Gillibrand released her 2018 tax returns on Wednesday, becoming the first presidential candidate to do so and challenging her rivals for the 2020 Democratic nomination to disclose their own.

Last year, the New York Democrat reported that she earned about $218,000 — bringing in $167,634 from her congressional salary and an additional $50,000 from her book deal. She paid $29,170 in federal taxes. Her husband, Jonathan Gillibrand, who has worked in venture capital, did not report any income in 2018.

“I want voters to know that I am beholden to no one, that my values are not for sale and that I’m working only for you,” Gillibrand said in a short video posted to her YouTube channel. “We can’t fundamentally change Washington unless we can show the American people we are brave enough to do what needs to be done.”

Gillibrand’s challenge could turn up the heat on other 2020 candidates, as well as distinguish her in the pack of presidential contenders. Gillibrand, who formally launched her campaign earlier this month and delivered a kickoff speech in Manhattan last weekend, is still struggling to break out of the pack, just cracking 1 percent in national and early- state polling.

I wonder who will be last.

It really won't take more than a day or two for those interested to go through any one candidates tax returns. If I was running I would wait until much, much later to know that I have a clearer path to the nomination. The field is crowded now and for those who are at the lower end of the poling spectrum I certainly wouldn't be in a hurry as why would I want that information out there when it wasn't likely I would get the nod.

It is possible to go years without income for many ventures, in particular if they are on the cutting edge of technology where a product is not yet developed or not yet accepted by paying customers. He could be a principal who is taking no salary, that happens often in some cases of relatively new venture capital firms. Once they get a hit idea, then the big money starts rolling in, but early years can be thin. I take him at his word because for anyone that know something about that field, it is easy to find out if he is lying. Why would he risk bad exposure?

Color me not impressed with KG's move. The expectation should be for at least 5 years of tax returns. I'm interested in seeing a candidate's tax returns BEFORE they decided to run for POTUS. Does anyone else question the fact that her husband reported zero income? What's the explanation for that for a guy working in the hedge fund industry? Did he defer all of his income?

The full current year's tax return can provide a large amount of detail about past year, in particular the one before because two of the entries are last year's income and taxes paid or refunded.

But in principle, I accept your argument overall, 8-15 years of tax returns tell a lot, in particular whether there was a year or two of massive income.

I think what she is trying to do with her tax return ploy is out those that have released little or nothing at all in a bad spot. I like her move for that reason.
