Philippe Reines Argues Joe Biden's Campaign Has Funding Issues: 'His Biggest Problem is Money'

Mediaite

By Connor Mannion Jan 1st, 2020, 11:43 am

Former Hillary Clinton adviser Philippe Reines told MSNBC that though Joe Biden’s poll numbers remain strong in a number of areas, he sees the campaign having issues in terms of money.

Reines was appearing on an edition of MSNBC Live New Year’s Day on Wednesday, anchored by Geoff Bennett. He argued it wouldn’t be wise of Pete Buttigieg to attack Biden too harshly, and argued Sen. Bernie Sanders was benefiting from not jumping into intra-candidate fights.

“Biden’s numbers have been rock solid especially among black Americans,” Reines said. “And his biggest problem is money and the biggest thing that’s happened in 2020 is Buttigieg has announced his fourth quarter totals, which was an eye-popping $25 million. The biggest difference between him and Biden is that Biden won’t have that kind of number and we’ll see if his poll numbers and his money numbers are a huge gap.”

“Just so I don’t get attacked on Twitter, Bernie’s numbers have just been off the charts,” Reines continued. “He has been raising $26-27 million for every quarter and got to figure that he will have a big quarter too. Might not find out for a couple weeks, but money is a big deal.”

Biden's support is wide, but low fundraising means his support is not as deep as Bernie's Five Million Donations!

Former Vice President Joe Biden, meanwhile, has rebounded from a weak third quarter, in which he raised only $15.7 million. The Biden Campaign in the final 48 hours of the year to post “our biggest fundraising quarter yet,” as Biden wrote in an email Sunday, by topping the $21.5 million he raised last spring.

I'm not denying that money won't help in a run against Trump, but the polling suggests that Biden can beat Trump and win the Electoral College. None of the other Democratic candidates have shown that strength, including Bernie despite all the money he has raised.

A lot of people aren't going to make donations during the primary contests because they may feel it is unwise because their preferred candidate is not an absolute lock. Those people may decide to wait to see if Biden locks up the nomination before they contribute (the same applies to other candidates also). However, once the race becomes the Democratic nominee vs. Trump then the wallets and pocketbooks will open, checks will be written, and people will enter the three digit CVV code from their credit cards on campaign Websites.

It is foolish to believe that contributions made during the primary season are going to reflect contributions made for the purpose of the general election.

Oh, and here are some emojis for you. They're free so I'm happy to give them to you and have another drink on me!

That last emoji reminds me, I need to make a quick trip to the refrigerator.

Speaking of which, if I was at a biergarten the two candidates this cycle that I would have been most happy to see and enjoy their company are Joe and Beto. I would have walked away or turned my back if Bernie appeared.

then perhaps you should save and make one large donation instead. That's what I did when I donated to Beto.

I feel sorry for those poor college students who can't afford tuition who were hood-winked that if they didn't donate immediately then Bernie's campaign would collapse. Bernie transferred millions of dollars from his Senate campaign fund to his presidential campaign fund. Why would he deceive those students if he didn't need the money immediately? Was it because he could brag about how many donations he received? The poor students could have had another pint of beer for that $2.70.

65. I have no regrets for making that donation in the third quarter for Beto.
Wed Jan 1, 2020, 11:40 PM
Jan 2020

It wasn't much, but I had absolutely no financial leeway in the first two quarters of 2019. If Beto remained in the race, then I would have made a larger donation in the fourth quarter since my finances have improved recently.

I didn't make any donations in the fourth quarter though since I am undecided as to which candidate I'm going to support. And while I'm undecided, I have made some decisions as to which candidates I am not going to support.

The thing is that if I do donate to another candidate, then I will be considered as a "new" supporter and I can contribute to the maximum of $2,800 for that candidate. I doubt that I will ever get close to giving anyone that amount, but at least I don't have to tally (get the username reference ) my debit card transactions for every $2.70 contribution to determine whether I've stayed within the FEC limits.

53. Sanders' campaign strategy has made those numbers meaningless.

Sanders' total donation numbers are inflated because his campaign specifically tells people to make multiple donations of small amounts rather than lump sums. Artificially manipulated numbers are meaningless.
