I have to consciously ignore Elizabeth Warren's voice. Not her words, not her ideas, not her message

but her voice.

BlueMTexpat said it perfectly below. “I am 100 percent behind Elizabeth's candidacy and I love what she is saying.

But I would absolutely love it if she would get a voice coach.

Hillary did and I believe that it made her a more effective candidate.”

We have been trained to dismiss voices of women as a society.

Especially Moms, especially middle aged women and older.

I saved and listened to Barack’s speeches over and over.

Elizabeth Warren was my candidate of choice since she declared. Her message is hard to share because, in part, of her voice.

I have to make an effort to hear her and pay attention to her. Her slightly wavering voice just makes it easy for me to tune out, and I really don’t want to do so. It’s baked in.

Listen to Tulsi and you hear a voice that people find compelling. It’s low and confident. In no comparison does Tulsi measure up to Elizabeth’s knees, except for the (cultivated, imho) quality of her voice.

Like racism, we don’t want to acknowledge the sexism “soup“ we are in, but we really have to.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

to support a candidate who probably will not appeal to enough voters in general election to win because of the mess she’s made with healthcare, her criticism and misrepresentation of Obama’s trade agreement efforts that may have cost Clinton votes, endorsing legislation that would remove the device tax which is an important funding source for the ACA establishing the principle that those who profit from healthcare should help pay for it, promising things she can’t possibly fund, and more.

trump, or whatever GOPer, would win in a landslide. I’d support Klobuchar if she gained traction or Harris if she were still running.

And, yes, I will support Warren in General Election and not criticize her like she did Obama, and Clinton by association, right up until the 2016 election.

I agree on what you were saying about Elizabeth Warren's voice too...you were very accurate. But I can handle her voice over Duval Patrick's voice anyday and his is so bad that I can't listen to anything he has to say because its vibration actually irritates me. Yesterday morning he was a guest on a Sunday Show and my daughter walked in the room and heard his voice right after the interviewer announced her guest and who he was and running for President and my daughter winced and said she couldn't listen to it.

She said she would rather listen to Trump's voice and she hates his voice and him.

voice and speech is outstanding, like her campaign and background. Women have run for president prior to Hillary Clinton of course. Democratic candidates include Geraldine Ferraro (1988), Shirley Chisholm (1972) and Carol Moseley Braun (2004). As well, many outstanding women have also run and served in Congress and other significant positions in government for decades. And more on the way.

~ There were snide comments here when Warren first announced, Re her 'school marm' and professor manner and eyeglasses. Got that right, trivial non issues. I think we can focus on the candidates' character, record and stance on issues, the important things.

Tue Jan 7, 2020, 03:00 AM

vocally, to get power and volume, don’t support the vocals with breathing from lower down, using the diaphragm, so their voice gets strained, taken off the vocal chords. You will see neck tightening and the voice sounds higher, thinned out. Same principle applies to singing, even with a mic. Has nothing to do with gender.

Beto has to work too hard when he’s projecting his voice. One can hear and see the working. Neither have any inherent vocal problem. Warren’s voice is strong, vibrant. Both have an energetic, animated delivery style.

Most listeners don’t notice, loving the sound for the person who makes it.

Exactly what I was going to say. It's not her tonality but at times the lack of diaphragmatic support that seems to cause some quavering.

As someone with a bit of hearing difficulty, I find her easier to understand and appreciate her clear enunciation.

Few are gifted with magnificent voices, fewer still learn to really use them, and fewer than that can handle the rigors of a campaign. You can (and perhaps should) hate the bastard with all your heart, but Reagan was the gold standard, lots of training and coaching, Al Gore is an example of someone who got rapidly better with work.

Tue Jan 7, 2020, 10:19 PM

and that would be because she's obviously speaking almost constantly. The slight quaver is almost certainly a result of a lack of support from the diaphragm and lower abdomen, something every singer has to overcome. Her voice is tired because she isn't supporting it; she needs to get to a voice coach, stat. At least she isn't trying to make it artificially low, which causes that annoying vocal fry. I think her basic speaking voice when it's not tired is just fine, though.

Wish I’d said it that way at the start but oh well.

Thanks!

49. Female voices get lower with age

Liz’s hasn’t much. I’m guessing she has never smoked. I think her voice is fine but in the general election the Rs will talk about it as they would for any female candidate.

how to expand the reach of her message.

First step is to identify the obstacles.

The poster BlueMTexpat said it really well:

“I am 100 percent behind
Elizabeth's candidacy and I love what she is saying.

But I would absolutely love it if she would get a voice coach.

Hillary did and I believe that it made her a more effective candidate.”

I’m adding that to my OP.

Are we evaluating all the voices of male candidates? Biden? Bernie? I mean seriously?

I understand what an issue sexism is but fuck this is disturbing

or the bias?

I see it in my own life now that I think about it. I’m not heard, my own messages dismissed, and it’s very possible my voice is part of the reason why.

I’ve got to get to work. Will check back.

We are just being aware of it. Republicans are horrible and they will make fun of her on that and other grounds.

I do think men will be judged on their voices too, but am aware that they will "pass" more easily as we have all been sort of brainwashed to think of deeper voices as more authoritative. I tend to dislike their voices if I dislike them, that is, Dotard's is annoying and Dubya's was. I used to really hate listening to Poppy Bush.

I'm not an expert though, so I can't say if it's a legitimate liability or not. I do agree on the voice coach, if she doesn't have one. Every candidate who can should have one, if only because you're giving speeches around the country constantly, and will have to keep that up if you win.
