Several former prominent supporters of Julián Castro in his home state are endorsing Joe Biden for president now that the Texan is no longer running and a day after he threw his support to Biden rival Elizabeth Warren.
In an announcement first shared with The Texas Tribune, Bidens campaign unveiled 11 new Texas endorsements, including nine from people who had been with Castro. They include five state representatives and members of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus: Reps. Rafael Anchia of Dallas, Ryan Guillen of Rio Grande City, Eddie Lucio III of Brownsville, Oscar Longoria of Mission and Armando "Mando" Martínez of Weslaco.
Bidens campaign hailed the endorsements as reflective of the momentum Joe Biden has going into Super Tuesday, or March 3, when Texas holds its delegate-rich primary.
Many of these community leaders previously endorsed Secretary Castro and are now supporting Joe Biden because they know that Biden has the experience, record, and heart to step into the Oval Office and immediately deliver for working families, Bidens Texas state director, Jane Hamilton, said in a statement.
Biden's latest Texas endorsements also include Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff; Justin Rodriguez, the Bexar County commissioner and former state representative from San Antonio; Leticia Van de Putte, the former state senator from San Antonio and 2014 nominee for lieutenant governor; Debra Guerrero, a trustee for the San Antonio Independent School District; and San Antonio lawyer Frank Herrera and his wife Cecilia Herrera, a former foreign diplomat.
The former vice president's campaign released the endorsements the day after Castro endorsed Warren, the U.S. senator from Massachusetts a quick turnaround following his withdrawal from the race Thursday. The endorsements also come hours before Castro and Warren are set to hold a rally together in New York City.
While Warrens campaign has been the most proactive in formally organizing in Texas ahead of the primary, Biden has consistently topped polls here and built a much longer endorsement list. Michael Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor, is also laying the groundwork for what his campaign has promised will be an unmatched effort in the state.
Most of the endorsements Biden announced Tuesday represent Democrats who were among Castros earliest endorsers. Martínez, Lucio, Anchia, Guillen, Rodriguez and Wolff were all part of the first wave of Texas endorsements that Castro released in March 2019

(3,697 posts)They felt it was too soon for him to endorse anyone with many commenting that they would now support Biden. They also felt the endorsement had been planned for a while given the slick video that was rolled out within 24 hours. While some felt Warren was the logical candidate for him to support but many others felt it should have been Biden. I was somewhat surprised by that. This is all twitter chat so take it for what it's worth.

(3,697 posts)by going after Joe so strongly. I think we'll see the largest number of folks move to Biden when their first choice candidate drops out. I was surprised by the number of KHive folks on twitter saying they are moving to Biden since Kamala dropped out. I think some of that is driven by Biden being seen as the candidate with the best chance to beat Trump.

The 11 new endorsements in Texas build on Bidens previously announced 16 endorsements in the state. They include nods from five members of the Texas state House: Rafael Anchia, Ryan Gullien, Eddie Lucio III, Oscar Longoria and Armando Martinez.
Biden was also backed by Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Bexar County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez, former State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, lawyer Frank Herrera, former foreign diplomat Cecilia Herrera and San Antonio School District board member Debra Guerrero.
