A dark-money group linked to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has spent about $20,000 on anti-Biden Facebook ads aimed at South Carolina voters.
Its one of the first salvos of negative advertising in a primary race thats otherwise remained mostly positive. The group, a 501(c)4 called Organize for Justice, uses a barely month-old Facebook page called Watercooler Politics. Organize for Justice is a sister organization to Justice Democrats, which is a liberal political action committee closely linked to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez; the group even recruited AOC to run for office.
Sometimes the candidate that seems like the safest choice isnt the safest choice. reads the ad on which Organize for Justice has spent the most money, at least $7,500, as of Monday.
In close second is an ad on which at least $5,500 has been spent, which reads: The United States has the largest prison system in the world. As Senator, Joe Biden helped build it.
Both ads have been shown about half a million times, if not more, to South Carolina voters since Dec. 19.
All of the ads link directly to news articles, sometimes months old, that support the ads argument. None of them appear to collect contact information or solicit donationssuggesting that the goal of the ads is to change South Carolina voters minds.
South Carolina is the fourth state to vote in the race to decide the Democratic nominee for US president, voting on Feb. 29. The state is seen as a stronghold for Bidenin large part because many of the states Democratic voters are African-Americans who, polls show, overwhelmingly support Biden.
It seems likely that the ads are meant to appeal to African-American voters in particular, based on the the prison-related message and also on an electability argument, factors many political strategists believe resonate with that demographic group. Its not clear how Organize for Justice has used Facebooks powerful targeting tools to seek its voters; Facebook doesnt publish the choices that advertisers make.
Waleed Shahid, a spokesman for Organize for Justice said the ads were targeted to South Carolina Democrats generally. I think Democrats in general care about racial justice and civil rights issues, he said.
Other ads that Organize for Justice may have concluded were less successful at getting clicksand thus, perhaps, changing minds and votesfocused on foreign policy; social security; and Anita Hill. Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee when it harshly questioned Hill over her accusation of sexual harassment against Clarence Thomas, who, at the time in 1991, was being considered for a seat on the Supreme Court. Joe Biden did a disservice to me. A disservice, more importantly, to the public, reads the Anita Hill quote in Organize for Justices ad.
A few ads from Organize for Justice, on which very little money has been spent, criticize Pete Buttigieg and were targeted to Iowa voters. Shahid said the group was still testing its messages in Iowa, but planned to ramp up its ads shortly. In a press release sent after Quartz asked Organize for Justice about the ads, the group said it hoped to spend at least half a million dollars on paid digital advertisements in the next two months.
Justice Democrats has focused on primary challenges against less-liberal Democrats. Encouraging primary challenges against non-white members of Congress has earned Justice Democrats the ire of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Jeffrey Chester, director of the Center for Digital Democracy, told Quartz he thinks ads that target voters based on location should not be used. All candidates should agree that they will not use data-driven ads without full disclosure of the techniques, spending and impact, he wrote in an email.
Shahid, from Organize for Justice, said the ads were designed to educate voters about Biden and Buttigiegs records. Joe Biden is still the frontrunner in many national polls. He has a record that I dont think voters have gotten to be as familiar with as they should be. Shahid said the organization was looking into video advertisements on various platforms, potentially including YouTube.
I cant believe this stuff trying to target Joe using any information they get their greedy hands on...about Joe are you jealous...
I will not be on crap Facebook from day one got my reason

They don't mention that as Representative Sanders ALSO helped build it and attempted to fill it even more by clamoring in 1995 to increase the penalty for powder cocaine.

They don't do it for other democrats. I didn't hear calls for no infighting when Kamala was being called a cop or when Booker's voting record was being assailed. We won't hear those calls when Biden's having the everything including the kitchen sink thrown at him.

And what exactly is false in that expose?
Also, if Biden's campaign is running scared over some small liberal group like that, spending 20 grand to expose some of his past, imagine the Koch Brothers, dark Russian money, all of it digging up and blowing up, every tiny mistake by Joe in the last 4 decades. Which is why the biggest mistake the Democrats could make would be to nominate Joe. I like him, as I did Hillary, but way too much baggage. Whether it is GOP manufactured baggage or not.

(53,815 posts)Sanders, as I stated, has tons of baggage himself. As for who's afraid of Sanders, their only fear is he'll be divisive again as he was in 2016 and won't promptly back the the Dem nominee when he doesn't get it and thus help trump win again. .

(14,175 posts)He followed the rules. And by extending his campaign as far as was allowed by the DNC, even until past knowing the winner, did no good to him as far as winning...obviously. I don't want to refight those primaries. Hillary won.
The only reason he did it was to squeeze a bit more progressive policy into Hillary's platform. Resulting in potentially helping American workers to get a higher minimum wage increase, sooner. (If Hillary had technically won). If one cares about that issue, then folks should be applauding him for that move. Immediately after he achieved this goal, he immediately endorsed her, urged his followers to, and went on the campaign trail for her.
To blame a fringe element of Sanders supporters, like the PUMA group who vowed not to vote for Obama, is dumb and divisive in its own right.

(14,175 posts)I love your enthusiasm!
And I see you also are a bicandidate supporter ha. Warren is a close second for me. And should be for any Sanders supporter. As Sanders should be for any Warren supporter. That is IF you are not voting based on superfluous things like gender, or age, or ancestry, or a candidate once wrote something naughty, or once was a Republican etc,....... but support a candidate on their actual platforms they run on today. What they stand for.
I hope that Warren or Sanders supporters do not fall for the manufactured rift between the two. Dividing their supporters will be the number one goal for Trump, the GOP, Fox News, and...within the Democratic party. Even Obama has threatened Sanders if he dares to look like he's going to win. We will be fighting it from all sides. But Sanders is better equipped this time round and ready for the smears. I hope Warren is smart enough to know what they are trying to do, or how it is self defeating to her agenda.

I would only ADD one thing: we should not only "support a candidate on their actual platforms they run on today... what they stand for," but also on that candidate's honesty and reliability, sufficient to TRUST that they will FOLLOW THROUGH with campaign promises based on their platform and work hard to actually ENACT those changes. Frankly, I'm sick and tired of politicians who promise one thing in the primary, then after capturing the nomination, "move to the center" and then won't work very hard, or even TRY, to get THAT done!!
I GUARAN-DAMN-TEE you Bernie is 100% trustworthy in that respect and will NEVER let his supporters down. President Sanders may get resistance to some of his proposed progressive agenda items, and other promised changes, from RethugliKKKons, or even "moderates" in his own Democratic Party, but failure to get that done won't be for Bernie's lack of trying.

(14,175 posts)Yes good point. And its not even moving to the center they seem to do without any real need to, its moving from the center, to the right. (Obama's offer to put SS and Medicare on the table for one). I too am sick of it.
Will a Sanders (or Warren) Presidency mean a full fledged single payer medical system after their term is up? Probably not. I'm pragmatic about it. But I can be damn sure that Sanders would be working hard to get the US as close as he can to that ideal. At the very least give some education, some actual stats to back him up, and a plan to pay for it. Opening up eyes to see that its not a pipedream at the very least. Lay the stepping stones for it.
Of course there will be massive opposition by Fox News etc... But at least the truth will sink in to a few more people, assuming that even more establishment Democrats will rally round behind him and help him. He can't do it without their help. And America would be one step closer, even if he is not 100% successful. At least we will know he will always have integrity and as you say, we can rely on his "honesty and reliability" to at least TRY to actually move back from the usual center/right, cap in hand, to the center/left, and actual progress.

(673 posts)Americans have moved a little left over time. However, moderate democrats would have been seen a much more liberal 30 years ago. The idea that lefits candidates could compete in most districts is false. Progressives can win in very blue places, but clearly from their election record over the past few cycles that doesnt carry into anywhere else.
Moderate democrats are the norm and have proven they can win in swing/red districts.
