Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders's agenda makes him the definition of unelectable
Washington PostWe should have that debate, because the fact is that the United States has never elected anyone as president who is as far left as Sanders. The only modern Democratic nominees approaching Sanderss ideological views were former vice president Walter Mondale in 1984 and then-Sen. George McGovern in 1972. Together, they won a scant 30 electoral college votes and lost the popular vote by a combined 35 million votes. Mondales wipe-out was the biggest electoral college loss in U.S. history.
For those who say these landslide races were ages ago, and that Donald Trump is no Ronald Reagan, fair enough. How about December 2019? That is when Sanders clone Jeremy Corbyn got routed by Trump clone Boris Johnson in the British parliamentary elections, sending the Labour Party to what some said was its worst defeat in more than 80 years. Corbyn, who Sanders predicted would lead his party to a resounding victory and should be a lesson for the Democratic Party, tanked. He literally repelled voters, former Labour MP David Milliband wrote after the debacle.
For Sanders to have a chance of winning, let alone proving to be the most electable as he claims, Americans would suddenly have to become comfortable with socialism. That would be quite a change, since, as of three months ago, socialism was viewed negatively in the United States by a 13-percentage-point margin (55 percent negative, 42 percent positive), according to the Pew Research Center.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/democratic-debate-january-poll/.........................................
Unsurprisingly, given her strong debate performance, Warren was also the biggest winner in terms of attracting potential voters. She gained a little over 3 points in the share of respondents who said they were considering voting for her. Buttigieg and Klobuchar also gained roughly 2 points each in potential support. Gains were pretty small for the other candidates, though less than a point each for Biden and Sanders, and a little over 1 point for Steyer.
.......................................
We also asked likely Democratic primary voters how favorably they felt about each candidate both before and after the debate. And perhaps unsurprisingly, it was the less-well-known candidates who gained the most: Klobuchar and Steyer saw the largest jumps in net favorability (favorable rating minus unfavorable rating) 5.8 points and 5 points, respectively. Buttigieg and Warren also did well on this metric, however, with Buttigieg picking up 4.7 points and Warren 3.9 points. Sanders and Bidens net favorability, on the other hand, actually fell a bit Bidens dropped by 1.6 points, and Sanders took the biggest hit in this metric, falling by 3.6 points.

McCarthy added that former Vice President Joe Biden should stop campaigning during Trump's impeachment trial -- out of deference to Sanders, who'll be tied up at the trial. (McCarthy made no mention of the other senators who'll also be taken off the campaign trail during the trial.)
All of this may seem bizarre -- and to a very real extent, it is -- but it's not accidental. There's a GOP strategy unfolding, and it's based on a couple of assumptions.
First, Trump and McCarthy seem to believe Sanders' supporters can be manipulated -- a belief I suspect the Vermonter's backers will find insulting -- and intra-party divisions in Democratic politics can be stoked to ensure Trump's re-election. McCarthy's reference to superdelegates was especially notable: some Sanders supporters are under the mistaken belief that Democratic superdelegates derailed the senator's 2016 candidacy, which is not what happened.
Second, Republican attempts at mischief notwithstanding, the New York Times reports that Donald Trump's political advisers see Bernie Sanders as "their ideal" general-election opponent. To that end, the article added, members of the president's team "have been doing what they can to elevate [the independent senator's] profile and bolster his chances of winning the Iowa caucuses."

(115,895 posts)and that's just not true. Nobody wins elections without the support of far more voters than comprise their ideological base, and the Democrats' traditional tent is a very large one that includes millions of people who characterize themselves as "moderate." There is also a large number of people who call themselves independents, some of whom favor Democratic politicians but are not ideologues and could go either way. You have to cast a wide net to be successful, but these days Bernie's net looks like something you'd use in your 25-gallon aquarium stocked with neon tetras and goldfish.

(58,785 posts)rousing his people to support the legislation he introduces, to the point that he'll be able to make congress offers they "can't refuse." A somewhat similar, but far, far less friendly, approach to congress than Trump's. Trump has managed to obtain the support of his own party in congress after all, although they still do the legislating, sorta.
My questions are, does he plan to do that for all the legislation he "introduces" that a majority, Democrats or otherwise, won't support (and we should assume from this approach that he expects it to be a great deal). And if so, are you expecting to march in the streets to demand the house and senate pass every bill the president writes, or just some? How is that going to work? Is a congressional compliance actually necessary?
Of course, Trump's still hoping to pull a people-supported coup off, and his ass out of the fire, and Republican congressional fear of his trumpsters has been a great asset. Any insights from what else is working for him and not?
... So I dont accept that. But, second of all, the point that I am making is that the way you bring about real change in this country, what the history of America is about is when millions of people stand up for justice. So again, when I say to you in due respect, and I mean that we look at the world differently. Youre saying, how do I negotiate with Mitch McConnell? And Ill tell you how I negotiate. Because when the people of Kentucky are demanding to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour or health care for all or making their schools, public colleges and universities tuition-free, thats the basis of negotiation. O.K.? ... Thats how change comes about: You make an offer to Mitch McConnell that he cannot refuse, and that is that the American people want to move in a different direction.
KK: background checks. So I guess Im curious how it will be different.
Again, we do live in different worlds.
KK: Yes.

(280 posts)I am not able to see how Bernie could ever beat Trump. Bernie yells his ideas at everyone (with that angry red spittle face of his) but he doesn't give nearly enough specifics as to how he will get his ideas written into law. He does indeed come across as a loud and angry socialist. That's just my honest take from watching his debate performance. And good grief...if he wins the nomination...Trump and the Russians won't need to write any attack ads...cuz those attack ads are gonna write themselves.
P.S. And last nite...Elizabeth did not put up with any of Bernie's nonsense. I thought she did fantastic against him.

(22,917 posts)And no one credibly accuses Bernie Sanders of being antisemitic. Details matter. And Americans will need to become comfortable with a mixed economy... No, wait. They already are, and they like it. That's what Sanders advocates for. Americans strongly support social safety nets. Sanders isn't advocating nationalizing any major industries.
If Republican conservatives can overnight become Russia lovers, American voters can certainly support expanding Medicare.

When Herr Drumpf focuses this much attention TOWARD Sanders, something is up (as in Bernie's chances)! Drumpf's a war criminal, among other horrible things, but he knows the politics of fomenting enthusiasm and HE finds Sanders electable. Trump lies about everything. He's lied more than 12,000 times since he became president. Are you suggesting that we should suddenly start believing him?
"debate day fundraising numbers"
Are irrelevant if those dollars aren't turned into votes. He's raised more and spent more than any other candidate, yet he's within a point or two of where he was eight months ago. To date, all the money has done very little.
