Former Vermont (Democratic) Governor: Sanders 'will play dirty'

This news story just popped up, and since it's the opinion of a major Democratic politician from Vermont, I thought it should be posted here for people to consider:

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/478715-former-vermont-governor-sanders-will-play-dirty

Vermont's former governor went after Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Thursday, saying that the longtime senator was willing to "play dirty" during campaigns.

Former Gov. Peter Shumlin (D), who was Vermont's governor from 2011 to 2017, told Politico that Sanders, an independent and a self-described Democratic socialist, lacks loyalty to the Democratic party.

“What I’ve seen in Bernie’s politics is he and his team feel they’re holier than the rest. In the end, they will play dirty because they think that they pass a purity test that Republicans and most Democrats don’t pass,” Shumlin told the publication.

“What you’re seeing now is, in the end, even if he considers you a friend, like [Sen.] Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Bernie will come first. That’s the pattern we’ve seen over the years in Vermont, and that’s what we are seeing now nationally," he added.

-snip-

Shumlin, who has endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden, also said that Sanders was trying to "Hillarize," Warren, referring to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“We should be weakening Donald Trump, not each other,” Shumlin said. “I’m concerned that we’re seeing a replay of the kind of dynamics that didn’t allow Hillary to win.”

-snip-

Editing to add some info on Shumlin from Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Shumlin

Peter Elliott Shumlin (born March 24, 1956) is an American politician from Vermont. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 81st Governor of Vermont from 2011 to 2017. [1] He was first elected to the office in 2010, and was reelected to a second term in 2012. In 2014 he received a narrow plurality in his race for reelection, but did not attain the 50% threshold mandated by the Constitution of Vermont. In such cases the Vermont General Assembly elects the winner.[2] The legislature almost always selects the candidate who received a plurality; this held true, and the General Assembly re-elected Shumlin to a third term by a vote of 110–69 in January 2015.[3] In June 2015, Shumlin announced that he would not seek re-election in 2016.[4] He has signed laws on physician-assisted suicide as well as the United States' first genetically modified food labeling requirement during his tenure as governor. He was chair of the Democratic Governors Association during his first two terms.

He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1990 to 1993, and represented the Windham District in the Vermont Senate from 1993 to 2003 and 2007 to 2011. He was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Vermont in 2002.[5][6]

Editing again -- this is from the Politico article that article at The Hill cites:

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/01/16/bernie-sanders-elizabeth-warren-feud-100129

Shumlin said his critique of Sanders is not sour grapes, noting that Sanders endorsed him and campaigned for him in Vermont. Shumlin also had attempted to enact a single-payer health care system in the state, an effort that ultimately failed.

Still, Shumlin teed off on Sanders’ relationship with Vermont Democrats.

“Don’t forget, the first office he won was beating the Democratic mayor of Burlington. He never endorsed most Democrats until his Senate career,” Shumlin said. “The only way he could win the Senate seat and avoid a Democrat winning the nomination and splitting the vote in the general election has been to run for the Democratic nomination, win it and immediately turn it down.”
If I were to vote in a presidential

If single payer is implemented nationwide, money will need to go to small states that can not raise billion dollar sums on their own for such a purpose, that was essentially the argument of Shumlin and the two other national Reps. Vermont would be a test case to iron out the bugs with single payer, and all Shumlin was asking was for Senator Sanders to help secure federal money to go along with what Vermont could put up. Senator Sanders refused to help.

My issue is the hypocrisy, Senator Sanders talks about single payer systems on the stomp, but he had a chance to aid an excellent test case effort in his own home state and he took a pass while the other two federal people tried to help out.

Small states are better for that very reason. Vermont needed a billion dollars (around that amount) to jump start it's program, two of the three national representatives from the state worked to get the money, they got no help from the third, the very person who claims he can somehow bring a single payer style system to a broad and divided country.

it would not have to increase taxes by very mush. That is why the money that Shumlin needed Senator Sanders to help get was so critical.

One problem that I see with health insurance is that people are not going to change their habits. Earlier today I was out and about, the only other people that I saw that had appropriate weight was two young people that were working after school at a car wash, my guess is both were about 16-17 years old. Everywhere else I ran into overweight people, one woman that I saw in a skin and nail salon was beyond morbidly obese, it was sad. I don't notice as many people smoking as I used to, so that is a good trend, but the weight control and physical activity aspects of good health appear to be a losing battle, at least in my part of Florida.

the healthiest and most physically fit and practice lifestyles that help maintain their weight control. So, for several reasons, they will have to shoulder more of a load in any national or even regional system. I believe what we need is a state of mind change, politicians, especially republicans fail to see that our greatest national security threat is the physical condition and state of mind of many Americans. I met a MAGAT while out today, nice enough person, but he looked poorer that a church mouse and appeared to be living out of his truck, I really didn't know what to say to that person, his jingoism is a big part of his condition in life, but he didn't seem to be overtly hateful.

The more articles you’ll see like this.

It’s always interesting to watch what they attack. It tells you where they feel the most vulnerable. I have noticed that Bernie’s high sense of ethics is especially troublesome.

35. Yes, that's always why any Democrat criticizes Bernie.
Fri Jan 17, 2020, 08:06 AM

Because they are "afraid of ethics."

Especially ironic when considering this:

“Don’t forget, the first office he won was beating the Democratic mayor of Burlington. He never endorsed most Democrats until his Senate career,” Shumlin said. “The only way he could win the Senate seat and avoid a Democrat winning the nomination and splitting the vote in the general election has been to run for the Democratic nomination, win it and immediately turn it down.”

The Democrats who criticize Bernie aren't the fearful ones, and they aren't the ones doing the 'attacking."

There is a ton of information out there about sanders. The Clinton campaign had a very well written memo on sanders backed by a 1000 pages of supporting material that was not needed because sanders was eliminated mathematical by the results of the Super Tuesday races The GOP has a even larger file of oppo on sanders

Uh huh.

And that makes sense to some people.

And how would one Hillarize" Warren? How has the sanders campaign even tried to do that? They haven't linked he to Wall Street. Warren didn't vote for the crime bill. Warren, at least in theory, isn't' against Medicare for All. She isn't' calling what Sanders wants to do "Pie in the sky" and "Free ponies". Sanders wanted Warren to run against Clinton in 2016.

Do you guys ever read these things and think "Wow, this is so disconnected from reality"?
