(146,325 posts)He's sure he gets it. When it comes to certain groups, though, they're equally sure he doesn't get it at all. Bernie thinks racism has an economic cause. He is wrong about that. For people of color, racism is the cause of their economic problems and many other problems, as well.
Bernie can't see it. He does't believe it.

(9,823 posts)But its certainly true that baked-in racism (which is still there in our culture and our institutions) is a convenient and powerful handle by which a demagogue like Trump can get fearful and ignorant white people to vote against whatever charitable instincts they may possess.

My feeling is that, even if they don't always express their thoughts perfectly, none of our candidates are truly racist, none of our candidates are going to be instituting racist policies. Biden and Sanders would both promote good social policy. This is all divisive nonsense.

(7,375 posts)...that racism and sexism and etc. are the tools used in class warfare by the upper classes to work the working classes against each other. It's not completely wrong, but it is ridiculously simplistic. It ignores how bigotry is embedded in culture and identity. Most modern socialist thinkers have moved way beyond this kind of simplicity. But not Sen. Sanders it seems. And that concerns me greatly. He seems unable to synthesize new information and adjust his model of how the world works to the data.

(17,390 posts)Republicans always dismiss racism as a problem, argue that talking about it is "identity politics," and argue that juicing the economy will take of any problems associated with racism.
Sadly, this is Bernie's view as well. However, you can't have economic justice without social justice, otherwise the rich will just scapegoat minorities and immigrants.

(58,785 posts)are the only way racism can be successfully addressed, actually eliminated as it becomes impossible. And all other big problems of inequality, socially engineered mostly out of existence.
The enormous advances in equality that humanity has been making around the planet (ALL outside, not inside, the dreadfully failed socialist states of the 20th century) have not changed his mind.
Only a socioeconomic system whose structure makes it impossible for people to discriminate or exercise greed can succeed and thus is a moral imperative. Sanders idealistically sees equalizing the condition and opportunities of people in societies as ultimately the way to permanently improve the people themselves. And he believes democratic socialism is the start.
(Note, that is NOT the social democracy of some nations in Europe, which prioritizes individual rights and freedoms and includes capitalism.)

(22,913 posts)He does believe that economic anxiety amplifies racism and gives it fertile ground to grow in. Your OP header implies that Bernie thinks racism is caused by economic anxiety which is not true - he believes it gives it oxygen. People have an increased likelihood of actively seeking scapegoats when under duress. Racism becomes more virulent in times of economic anxiety.
Sanders may not sufficiently speak of racism as a stand alone malignant force, but he does not view it exclusively as a by product of economic oppression.
