Two former Vermont governors attack Sanders over scuffle with Warren

Former Vermont Govs. Madeleine Kunin and Peter Shumlin have criticized Sen. Bernie Sanders in the wake of reports that in a private meeting in December 2018, the Vermont senator told Sen. Elizabeth Warren a woman could not win the presidency in 2020.

In an interview Thursday with Seven Days, Kunin, Vermont’s first and only female governor, said she believes that Sanders did tell Warren a woman couldn’t win the White House. Hours later, Shumlin attacked Sanders, telling Politico, the Sanders campaign is playing “dirty.”

“As far as the conversation between he and Elizabeth Warren, I tend to believe her, since she’s been such a straight arrow on everything else,” said Kunin, who in 2016 endorsed Hillary Clinton.

In 1986, Kunin won reelection in a race against Sanders and Republican Peter Smith. Kunin said Sanders claimed during that campaign that he would do more for women if voters replaced her with him.

“He claimed to be a better feminist than I was,” she told Seven Days. “It shocked me at the time.”

Shumlin also sharply criticized how, in his view, Sanders has treated Warren.

“What you’re seeing now is, in the end, even if he considers you a friend, like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie will come first,” Shumlin said. “That’s the pattern we’ve seen over the years in Vermont, and that’s what we are seeing now nationally.”

When Sanders was my opponent he focused like a laser beam on “class analysis,” in which “women’s issues” were essentially a distraction from more important issues. He urged voters not to vote for me just because I was a woman. That would be a “sexist position,” he declared

One of the criticisms Clinton has received is that she is not authentic, that she is too political (i.e. scheming) and that she has been around for a long time so that she is a captive of various institutions.

If we’re counting from when Sanders was elected mayor of Burlington, he has been around for some time, too: 35 years. In part because he is a man, he can run as the ultimate outsider. Clinton can’t be the outsider even as her very candidacy defies precedent. Ever since women got the vote, we believed, like the good students we are, that the path to political participation, as instructed years ago by the League of Women Voters, was to be informed, understand the system and play by the rules. That’s how we could make it in a man’s world.

and more black than Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

He is also more Hispanic than Che Guevara and more LGBTQ than Harvey Milk.

His passion for environment tops that of Greta Thunberg.

His faith is higher than Mother Theresa and his economic acumen tops Paul Krugman.

He may also know more about wars than the generals do ... but I'm not sure about that.

They have seen him in his envionment . They are basing it on what they experienced and not on slogans, platitudes and spins like his supporters.

I trust, believe and side with Govs. Kunin and Shumlin.
