"Joe Biden is up for hugs, kisses, selfies with lab scientists" Omaha headline, 2017

Biden was in Omaha in May 2017 for the dedication of the Buffett Cancer Center. An article about that was published on May 25, two days after the dedication

https://www.omaha.com/livewellnebraska/at-dedication-of-buffett-cancer-center-joe-biden-calls-for/article_c6d6e510-3ffd-11e7-9505-b717053a7573.html

but I want to focus on this shorter article instead, which came out the day he was there, and is about how Biden reacted to scientists working at another medical building nearby:

https://www.omaha.com/livewellnebraska/health/grace-joe-biden-is-up-for-hugs-kisses-selfies-with/article_83f2a368-7b47-5b4a-b731-d6dfd6514d8d.html

“We waved and said, ‘Hey, Joe!' " said Carol Kindig, who works in the molecular diagnostics laboratory at the Munroe-Meyer Institute. Her job is to match bone marrow for patients who need transplants.

The vice president “forcefully walked right across that street,” she said. “He didn’t even look for traffic.”

“He hugged, he gave us kisses on our forehead. He took our phones, he took selfies,” she said.

He even talked to the 85-year-old Denison, Iowa, mother of a staffer who breathlessly told him her mother loved him.

“He said, ‘Call her up, I’ll talk to her,’” said Kindig. “He took the phone and talked to her. At least a 3- to 4-minute conversation.”

I found that article when I was doing a keyword search for

biden hospital hugs

and the option of

biden hospital hugs and kisses

turned up, and I decided to check that first, out of curiosity.

I was doing that particular keyword search because I believe it's more than likely that Biden's losses of loved ones -- particularly the loss of his first wife and his daughter in 1972 in the tragic car accident that also injured his sons, and then the loss of his son Beau to cancer in 2015 -- has left him with many, many hours of experiences in hospitals that would have really driven home the importance of physical touch in reassuring and comforting, even healing. Both the physical contact when he comforted others, and when he was being comforted.

I don't know how many of you have ever spent a lot of time in hospitals or nursing homes or rehab when loved ones were there, very sick or badly injured or dying, but there are many times when touch seems to be the only way, the best way, to offer comfort and reassurance. There are so many times when words don't suffice, especially at any physical distance.

I didn't find exactly what I was looking for on Google, maybe something about Biden himself mentioning such experiences.

But that little article about how he treated those scientists he saw wearing scrubs does seem relevant, because they would have been reminders of all his experiences at hospitals, all the people who'd tried to help his loved ones.

Some here might think it was "inappropriate" that he not only hugged those scientists, but gave them kisses on their foreheads.

But that's Joe Biden, who knows the importance of touch, and who isn't ashamed of it.

I admire him.

… he's always been overly physical. Some of this has been on camera - but it doesn't seem sexual or predatory.

I think there is also a celebrity vibe... there is a lot of overly physical contact between celebrities and fans. I think that explains one of the Al Franken accusers - accused of touching a woman's waist. The "fan" thinks they "know" the celebrity - and the celebrity likes the attention - it's nice to be recognized or remembered, especially if you're a lesser or medium known celebrity and miss the attention. Not talking about Greta Garbo, of course...

Then, in the late 70s, it became acceptable to do so, as we moved away from the old notions of masculinity; in less than a generation, old taboos were discarded, and physical displays of emotion and affection became common.

I saw this as a good thing at the time; nowadays, I have begun to wonder if it wasn't a mistake.

...it's probably not politically sustainable, either.

None of those instances would justify unwanted physical contact of the kind Lt. Gov. Flores described, and her complaints confirm that.

I think Joe Biden is on the right track in how his spokesman addressed the essay. But this defense of yours wouldn't fly if this had been adjudicated. If anything, it just confirms that he likes to initiate close physical contact with people around him, strangers included. It's not always going to be okay. It appears to not have been okay, probably inappropriate in this case.

This defense depersonalizes the alleged incident, and in that disassociation, fails to address the individual complaint with any sense of the potential impropriety of his actions. That may be a problem. We'll see.

I think Joe's a smart guy, he'll likely figure this out.

while she was waiting backstage to speak, and judging by her own description of her behavior probably seemed nervous, possibly close to a panic attack.

THIS thread is just my explanation of one possibility of why Joe might so often use hugs and kisses to offer reassurance and support.

It also might be from his family background, but I'm not familiar with that.

I do know that my own experiences around hospitals and nursing homes made me aware of how important touch is and how often people who hadn't previously realized its importance will come to realize that.

I have not "depersonalized" the incident Flores described. I just looked at her description of it closely and came to the conclusion that she was apparently unaware of how nervous she would have likely seemed when she started doing deep breathing just before she was about to speak. Suddenly taking deep breaths could have meant either that she was doing so deliberately to try to cope with stage fright, or doing so as she started to hyperventilate, and in either case a quick reassurance would have seemed like a good idea.

...I hope Mr. Biden's personal response is something other than this.

That's going to be the measure of this, his personal response. I wouldn't use your defense, mainly because it wouldn't be particularly dispositive in a formal complaint, and it's likely to elicit a negative response from the individual who has already given her own perspective of the alleged incident.

I am not supporter of Biden except in so far as he is a Democrat and very active; I think he is a people person.

There are millions of people in the world who touch, hug, and kiss people-and who have no intention of being "sexual."

There are also great numbers of people who do not like to touch or be touched and are often perceived wrongly as being cold and uncaring.

And I certainly had no reservations about him greeting me in such a manner. His greeting made me feel comfortable as I would in greeting an old friend or relative.

If he decides to definitely run, I will support him again as I believe we need someone of Joe's demeanor to lead us out of this horrible battle of the parties and get our country back on track.

Joe reminds me of that old raggedy pair of jeans that you just can't throw away. They may be covered in paint, torn and unraveling, but they feel good and fit comfortably.
