Montana's Open Congressional Seat Is Ready For Progressive Dem Tom Winter

by Howie Klein

Because it shouldn’t be filled with a Republican– from either party. Meet Blue America’s first endorsement of 2020.

There’s a red hot 2020 race for Montana’s one at-large congressional district to replace pugilistic multimillionaire Greg Gianforte. State Rep. Tom Winter is the progressive in the race, although the DCCC thinks they’ve found their very own ‘next Jeff Van Drew’ and are working against Winter.

We asked him to help us understand what’s going on in his state in regard to his race, one that the national media has been almost completely ignoring.

“Running for Congress as a Democrat out here in Montana,” he told us, “can get lonely… not because of the seven hour drives to fundraisers in Billings– I like the road. It’s not the blizzards– I like winter, after all. And it’s certainly not Montana being unfriendly to Democrats– I previously won a +11 point Trump district, and Democrats represent us in the Governor’s mansion and in the U.S. Senate.”

“No,” he continued, “it’s lonely because within my own party it seems at times that I am one of the only voices fighting for Democratic principles at all. From impeachment to the climate crisis to workers’ rights to healthcare, I find myself battling against Republican talking points spouted by my establishment Democratic opponent… For months I have been the only Montana congressional candidate from either party loudly and cogently making the argument for impeachment. Any Democratic candidate that is not supporting the hard work of Congress on impeachment is running against the party and the values that make us who we are.

There’s been relatively little news here lately about the congressional race. I expect it to ramp up soon...I believe fundraising reports are due this month. Dems have quite a few good candidates running. I’m a Whitney Williams fan for the moment...she is daughter of former congressman Pat Williams. I would be happy to support former Lt Governor, Mike Cooney or Tom Winter. Actually any Dem running will get my enthusiastic support...unfortunately, I fear this election is Greg Gianforte’s to lose at this point. That thug incumbent has money to burn and, at the end of the day, MT is a big red state.

in will go back to one................the ranchers and farmers have been hit hard by the traitor and his enablers in the right wing cabal, and Gianforte is one of the main culprits of the decriminalization that we have seen in Congress, he did absolutely nothing when they had power for over two years, and now they are whining that there is no due process in the impeachment.................he is disgrace, he helped with the enabling of treason........................it is that simple.......................and then he tries to blame democrats.................he has no spine to admit that he and his party is kompromat, ....................there are member in his "republican" party that have taken Russian money.................that is fact....................he is in my opinion a traitor to the Rule of law................and the Constitution.....................he is a Montana transplant.............it took him 1:38 seconds to show his treason.............................

political pulse because I was born, raised and have family there, although I haven't resided in MT since 1980.

This is the first I have heard about Tom Winter.

Here are the declared Democratic candidates so far for the MT 2020 primary race for the US House of Representatives. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_United_States_House_of_Representatives_election_in_Montana#Democratic_primary

Of the three declared candidates, however, I am a personal fan of Kathleen Williams. https://kathleenformontana.com/

But I will financially support ANY Dem who gets the nomination.

than the progressive achievements of the other Democrats running, and he's more electable, why isn't the DCCC backing him as our most promising choice?

Seriously, that they're specifically not makes him sound questionable to me. After all, the DCCC is ALL about getting Democrats who can win election into office; and although they do vet for adequate character and lack of criminal records and scandals, they mostly believe filling those seats with progressive Democrats require respecting what local voters want in the way of ideology and goals. Since we're the progressive party, believing in progressive solutions is an asset, not a problem. Even our blue dogs are almost all progressive conservatives.

So, what gives? Maybe research a little deeper into this guy. I promise there will be reason. Those people work themselves to exhaustion for years to give us our best chance at majorities so we can get things done. Maybe someone else has more support and a better ground game. They can't back everyone they'd like to.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
