Clinton aide responds to Buttigieg criticism of how she ran her campaign

An aide to Hillary Clinton on Saturday slammed comments made in January by South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg that were critical of how Clinton ran her 2016 presidential campaign.

"This is indefensible," Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill wrote on Twitter Saturday. "@HillaryClinton ran on a belief in this country & the most progressive platform in modern political history. Trump ran on pessimism, racism, false promises, & vitriol. Interpret that how you want, but there are 66,000,000 people who disagree. Good luck."

Buttigieg knocked Clinton in an interview with The Washington Post Magazine that was published Jan. 14.

“Donald Trump got elected because, in his twisted way, he pointed out the huge troubles in our economy and our democracy,” he told the outlet in the interview. “At least he didn’t go around saying that America was already great, like Hillary did.”

The article, titled "Could Pete Buttigieg Become the First Millennial President?" was published a little more than a week before the Indiana mayor announced he was forming an exploratory committee to run for president.

I think he is a good man and his advisers have probably told him that the target is Trump and not our 2016 nominee.

He will rebound.

He is saying what he really thinks, and what he thinks the voters need to hear. He is making a break with the past. The voters will decide if they want to go this direction. But if he backs down, he looks weak and confused, then nobody will follow him.

In a coastal state with 4.5 million Trump voters, Pete Buttigieg says coastal states don’t know Trump voters
By Philip Bump
March 29 at 1:17 PM

“The other thing I’ve noticed, though, is there are some folks I encounter here who seem to have trouble believing that things like Trump voters actually exist,” Buttigieg said. “And so I feel sometimes like I’m an emissary from the middle of the country just pointing out that things look a little bit different in rural communities, industrial communities like mine and that we really need to find ways to knit this picture back together into one America.”

“I think people are just puzzled by why people where I’m from make the political choices sometimes that they do,” he said.

... Again, Buttigieg’s point was that the general stereotype of Trump voters — rural, blue-collar, white — might have seemed foreign to San Franciscans. But the issue is that the stereotype is often wrong. There are hundreds of thousands of people on the coasts who may have voted for Trump for very different reasons than people in Buttigieg’s home state of Indiana.

If Buttigieg really wants to understand Trump voters, incidentally, he was in the right place. For every Trump voter in Indiana, there were three in California.

We see all to well what's happening, how people are getting their information. We hear the dog whistles. It's not puzzling, it's actually sad.

Saying someone is "puzzled" is like saying "she (usually it's a she) just doesn't get it" - it's condecending.

In 2016, there were a large group of people who felt they never recovered from the impact of the market crash of 2008. That crash was partly due to BAD policy of the Bush administration. Obama and the Democratic Congress did everything they could to keep the economy going off the cliff, with the Republican party doing everything it could to make that more difficult to achieve. (An interesting comparison is that in 2008, when the first steps needed to be done, the Bush administration had MORE cooperation from the Democrats than their own House members on the early TARP votes.)

Mayor Pete is correct that many people hurt by the economy in the rust belt were picked up by Trump because he said he would bring jobs back and help them. (which he has not come close to doing.) Hillary Clinton had a tougher argument to make - that the Obama administration did a tremendous job on the economy, but there were still things that needed to be done. There were many many issues for which Hillary had detailed plans -- including rebuilding our infrastructure.

However, Trump dishonestly lied that Obama had destroyed the economy and he harangued against TPP and other trade deals arguing that they took those rust belt jobs. Unfortunately, there were people who were willing to buy what Trump was saying.

I also think that it would have been better to have OTHER Democrats call out Trump and have Clinton, as she did in the 2008 primaries, stay above things concentrating on making her own case.

It's a permanent campaign, a permanent war. The scam of making Americans think "both sides" depends on everything being terrible. The country and its institutions would be fine if Democrats had full control and actually pass legislation.
