The Times' endorsement criticizes Sanders & Biden for age, but not 70somethings Warren & Bloomberg

More than a little hypocrisy there...

But then, what would you expect when the paper couldn't decide on a single candidate for their endorsement, and turned the endorsement into a silly reality show starring the NYT staff that's been widely mocked on Twitter?

She would be finishing her second term at the same age that Sanders would be beginning his first.

Bloomberg's not even in the running.

From your link:

The history of the editorial board would suggest that we would side squarely with the candidate with a more traditional approach to pushing the nation forward, within the realities of a constitutional framework and a multiparty country. But the events of the past few years have shaken the confidence of even the most committed institutionalists. We are not veering away from the values we espouse, but we are rattled by the weakness of the institutions that we trusted to undergird those values.

There are legitimate questions about whether our democratic system is fundamentally broken. Our elections are getting less free and fair, Congress and the courts are increasingly partisan, foreign nations are flooding society with misinformation, a deluge of money flows through our politics. And the economic mobility that made the American dream possible is vanishing.

Both the radical and the realist models warrant serious consideration. If there were ever a time to be open to new ideas, it is now. If there were ever a time to seek stability, now is it.

That’s why we’re endorsing the most effective advocates for each approach. They are Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar.

It is such a far out thing to cite when you have no back up data to show us that in THIS case, with THIS particular woman candidate, such a thing has a likelihood of happening.

Please cite your data as it applies to this particular candidate. I am NOT amused.

Mon Jan 20, 2020, 12:31 PM

And although as a woman I am NOT happy about this, women are at greater risk:

https://www.alzheimers.net/8-12-15-why-is-alzheimers-more-likely-in-women/

https://www.statnews.com/2019/07/16/new-clues-women-alzheimers-risk-differs-from-men/

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6390276/

But one of the main things I learned is that individual factors, especially health habits, mitigate the risk of Alzheimer's.

Both Biden and Warren maintain good health habits, obviously.

Both are well-educated and very interested in life.

Both have great social support.

All of those factors put them at minimal risk for Alzheimer's.

And the same is true for Sanders and Bloomberg.

is considerably younger actuarially than a 77 or 78 year old man. A 70 year old white female has a life expectancy of 16 and a half years, while a man of 77 has one of 10 and a man of 78 has one of 9 and a half. Your point does stand with Bloomberg though.

Their choices and their reasoning are so close to what I've felt (and expressed on DU) for a long time. I've been waiting to see if Warren is on the crest of a wave (no individual can actually cause a revolution) or whether we have to go with pragmatism again. And they are the best representatives of each, I think.

I was also grateful for the many instances of eloquent articulation of thoughts I've mumbled to myself. The endorsements explained my own thinking to me!
