Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumOh dear Pete
How can we vote for someone who disses our last Democratic candidate, who received 3 million more votes than the winning one? And who doesn't believe we are a great country, despite our recognized problems. Sorry that's a fatal flaw!

(6,139 posts)I agree with him. If you are not willing to learn anything from 2016 campaign - please be prepeared for another 4 years of trump. We are now past the grieving time so its ok to talk openly. Hillary Clinton is the strongest woman alive - no amount of critisim can ever hurt her. I always thought she was brilliant and spot on when it comes to policies but I never found her an exceptional politician. Shes always been saying all the right things but many of those things were not politically savvy. E.g., when there is some islamist attack, you dont go around with speeches the next day insisting that we need to at least double our refugee acceptance rate. Hold it for a while and focus on other things. Extracts from her speeches would then be used non-stop to hammer the campaign and inflate the drama. And, yes, she got more votes, etc. But you just dont go anywhere close within the cheating margin of the worst candidate in the history of our country.
And if we learned one thing from 2016, it is that we should not even aknowledge trumps existence when campaigning in general 2020 election - talk about problems and solutions instead 100% of the time.

He is good at messaging, Obama and Bill Clinton were good at messaging. Hillary not so much. I am behind Pete for this very reason.
Trump knows how to message too, that's why he is so dangerous. We are fooling ourselves if we don't recognize how he zeroes in on his marks and whispers nasty nothings in their ears. He is planning to do this again, with perhaps an even more lopsided electoral victory than 2016.
Whoever our candidate is, ability to send the right message to the right people is a critical skill.

Why did the "progressive" Russ Feingold lose as well?
Johnson upsets Feingold to keep Wisconsin Senate seat
GOP Sen. Ron Johnson completed a stunning comeback victory over Democrat Russ Feingold on Tuesday, winning a race that Republicans had seen as a lost cause just weeks ago and dealing a serious blow to Democratic hopes of winning the Senate majority.
Johnson had 52 percent to Feingolds 46 percent when the race was called by three major television networks by 11:20 Eastern time, with 66 percent of precincts reporting.

Rigged: How Voter Suppression Threw Wisconsin to Trump
And possibly handed him the whole election.
After the election, registered voters in Milwaukee County and Madisons Dane County were surveyed about why they didnt cast a ballot. Eleven percent cited the voter ID law and said they didnt have an acceptable ID; of those, more than half said the law was the main reason they didnt vote. According to the studys author, University of Wisconsin-Madison political scientist Kenneth Mayer, that finding implies that between 12,000 and 23,000 registered voters in Madison and Milwaukeeand as many as 45,000 statewidewere deterred from voting by the ID law. We have hard evidence there were tens of thousands of people who were unable to vote because of the voter ID law, he says.

(25,537 posts)Another politician claimed that "The people of Detroit know the real cost of Hillary Clinton's free-trade policies" but obviously didn't know that Detroit lost more than a third of its population from 1960 to 1990, and that the documentary "Roger & Me" -- about the 1989 GM shutdowns -- happened before NAFTA. And that one of the reasons manufacturing goes to Mexico is that it has free trade agreements with many other countries (about 45) while as of 2016 the U.S. had free trade deal with only 20.
These simplistic blame-the-Democrats attitudes are dangerous.

(25,537 posts)The answer was that it depended on the candidate, one who doesn't only play to the base but has shared American values about pocketbooks and kids and things people care about. One with empathy, authentic, with integrity.
They didn't say Hillary's name, but it was about her. Authenticity. Empathy. Integrity. Values. Economic message. I guess it's easier to think that if they just get the right person everything's going to be fine, it's about personality. They thought it was important that Obama won the MidWest and Hillary couldn't do it (although she won the working class vote): after eight years of a disastrous Republican administration of course people wanted change. They vote for change, change for the heck of it or because the economy is terrible.
