MoveOn calls on Sanders to renounce Joe Rogan endorsement

The group, which endorsed Sanders in 2016 and is fueled by many of the same progressive activists that have also backed the Vermont senator’s White House bid, called on Sanders to reject the endorsement over Rogan’s past discriminatory comments.

“It's one thing for Joe Rogan to endorse a candidate. It's another for @BernieSanders’ campaign to produce a video bolstering the endorsement of someone known for promoting transphobia, homophobia, Islamophobia, racism and misogyny,” MoveOn tweeted Saturday.

“We urge Sen. Sanders and his campaign to apologize and stop elevating this endorsement. We stand in solidarity with folks hurt by this.”

It proves your argument is flimsy.

1) Did Hillary promote the endorsement of Stern? I don't recall that ever happening. Sanders took Rogan's endorsement and ran with it. Hillary did no such thing with Howard's endorsement.

2) Did Hillary go on Howard Stern's show in 2016 when she was running for president? No? Okay. And frankly, the issue here isn't that Bernie went on Rogan's show, it's that he openly embraced the endorsement of a bigot. You can go on someone's show, passionately disagree with their rhetoric, and not tie yourself to their views. But when someone endorses you, and you choose to flaunt it, you're, in some ways, legitimizing those views.

Bernie fucked up - just as he did with the endorsement of Cenk.

“Given Rogan’s comments, it is disappointing that the Sanders campaign has accepted and promoted the endorsement,” David added. “The Sanders campaign must reconsider this endorsement and the decision to publicize the views of someone who has consistently attacked and dehumanized marginalized people.”

I didn't know who Rogan was so just read an article about him in The Atlantic. Says his main targets are "Hillary, the #MeToo movement, why it sucks that he can't call things 'gay,' vegan bullies, sexism."

It will be interesting if they don't.

Wondering if Rogan will also endorse the eventual nominee and encourage his audience to vote Democratic. From the little I know about him he doesn't seem to despise the Democratic Party, so in that way maybe less damaging than Cenk, who definitely influenced his audience to not vote or vote third party against Trump.

96. Stern is toxic. I have no idea who Rogan is but it seems to be agreed he is also toxic.
Sat Jan 25, 2020, 06:27 PM
Jan 2020

But I can't compare the two.

My first exposure to Stern was when I moved back home in the early 90's and he had a morning show on a station I liked. At the time there was some significant ethnic conflict happening in the city. I listened to Stern's show a few times until I realized that he was basically baiting one side against the other. I was disgusted and sick. I turned to a different station and have avoided him ever since. I have no idea what anyone sees in him.

And Rogan sounds like someone I would turn off now before I even learned his name, so it's not surprising I don't know who he is.

I agree that the situations aren't equivalent, with Sanders celebrating the Rogan endorsement. (Wow. Right?)

But I don't agree with your statement that "Howard has never promoted hate in any form." I heard it otherwise in that timeframe I mentioned. But maybe he changed over the years.

I read someplace, that with this endorsement the campaign believes it can win over Indies that voted tRump.

Fact is they are alienating a huge, huge, huge number of our base, the Democratic base, Black, Women and LGTBQ. The thinking is convoluted, get a few white trump votes and lose thousands of our Democratic voters. He CAN NOT WIN WITHOUT THE BLACK VOTE.

Now are there limits? Sure. Like, I wouldn't vote for a war that would kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people just because it polled well and I didn't want to get painted as soft on defense. I wouldn't pander to racists by talking about welfare queens driving luxury cars. I wouldn't describe a war criminal like Henry Kissinger as a good friend who I look to for counsel. I wouldn't play up my good relationship with segregationists.

No offense to anyone who did those things. Big tent and all. But, yeah, taking an endorsement from a shock jock that says offensive things? That I would do.

Sat Jan 25, 2020, 06:49 PM
Jan 2020

That's a dangerous road. For example, Obama invited a homophobic pastor to his inauguration, which is arguably "kissing up" to a homophobe (and let's be honest, probably a racist too). The two-degrees-of-separation standard would then condemn anyone who has welcomed support from Obama, which is, well, pretty much the whole Democratic Party.

That's the problem I have with the purity testing.

and his podcast. In fact, Joe changed my life two years ago. The MSM and other journalistic systems fear this new filter free venue. Joe Rogan's podcast is now listened to 1.5+ billion times per year at around $50-100M/year revenue.
Independent and 100% owned by Joe, no networks, no middle men and 90 million downloads per month. Joe is a comedian, speaks his mind but is a fierce advocate for all lifestyles, climate change and conservation. Many of his guest are gay. As a comedian, sure, he has made comments that are parity. Joe is no racist or homophobe. That is bullshit. He's bigger than outdated cable and network news. I can assure you, his endorsement is not hurtful. MoveOn can't win a fight against Rogan. Bernie has zero reason to say anything.
