DMR also praised Warren's rivals, said some of her ideas go too far and her rhetoric is divisive

Last edited Mon Feb 3, 2020, 01:24 AM - Edit history (1)

Yes, the Des Moines Register endorsed Warren, and they're the most widely read paper in Iowa.

And I hope the endorsement moves some supporters from Sanders to Warren, especially with Republicans talking about meddling in the primary by voting for Sanders. (Though they'd have to re-register as Democrats to do so in Iowa.)

But the endorsement wasn't unmixed.

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/opinion/editorials/caucus/2020/01/26/elizabeth-warren-president-democrat-iowa-caucuses-des-moines-register-editorial-board-endorsement/4562157002/

A qualification: Some of her ideas for “big, structural change” go too far. This board could not endorse the wholesale overhaul of corporate governance or cumulative levels of taxation she proposes. While the board has long supported single-payer health insurance, it believes a gradual transition is the more realistic approach. But Warren is pushing in the right direction.

-snip-

Former Vice President Joe Biden would restore credibility in the White House and respect among allies around the world. Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg brings refreshingly smart, youthful optimism. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota offers a track record of bipartisan achievement. Much like Warren, Bernie Sanders champions the working class.

-snip-

Warren has proven she is tough and fearless.

But toughness can also be perceived as divisive, as can rhetoric that vilifies the wealthy, lobbyists and corporations that employ millions of people. Relentless attack mode threatens to further fracture a country riven by party, income and racial divides.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

This is primary season, blm, and NOT a holy war.

When you accuse supporters of other candidates of "evil" and "hatred" simply for disagreeing with Warren you're really taking this too far.

And in this case I'm being accused of "Warren hate" for quoting part of the Des Moines Register's endorsement.

Please try to get some perspective here.

I'm tired of it.

There are many, many threads here critical of all the candidates, including the one I support.

They aren't "evil."

They don't indicate "hatred."

And the only thing they're "driven by" is an interest in politics.

hadn't answered my question about where the DMR's editors had said what you claimed they said.

And I posted this OP because no one would ever have known from the other OPs about the endorsement that it wasn't an unqualified endorsement, and the DMR endorsement started with these paragraphs:

No wonder Iowa Democrats are unsettled.

Each of the remaining candidates campaigning across Iowa ahead of the caucuses could make a fine president. Each would be more inclusive and thoughtful than the current occupant of the White House. Each would treat truth as something that matters. Each would conduct foreign policy by coalition building rather than by whim and tweet.

The outstanding caliber of Democratic candidates makes it difficult to choose just one.
