Bernie: More jails and 'tougher' penalties in certain cases in 1994 remarks backing crime bill

Bernie Sanders said country needed more jails and 'tougher' penalties in certain cases in 1994 remarks backing crime bill

<snip>

"Bernie Sanders said in 1994 that he agreed the country needed "some more jails" and that it must be "tougher in certain instances" on crime.

The then-congressman from Vermont made the comments during a news conference in which he explained his support for the now-controversial 1994 crime bill. His remarks, video of which was obtained by CNN's KFile from CCTV-Center for Media & Democracy, a Vermont public access station, sheds light on Sanders' support of the now more controversial elements of the bill, and his reservations about other aspects."

<snip>

""If you keep kids in school, if you get jobs for young people, in the long run, not only do you prevent crime, but you save the taxpayers substantial sums of money," Sanders said, "Would I rather invest in education and keeping kids in school and making college opportunity a realistic goal for millions of young people rather than necessarily building one more jail. Yeah. I think I would have gone the other way."

"On the other hand, do I think we need some more jails? Yup. Do I think we have to get tougher in certain instances? Yes, I do," Sanders said. "So what you have is a balance here. You have more money going to law enforcement, more money going into jails. You have, on the other hand, significant sums of money going into prevention, beginning to allow us to deal with violence against women, child abuse and other very serious problems," Sanders said."

While Bernie Sanders has always stood up for African Americans, Joe Biden has repeatedly let us down

<snip>

"Similarly Biden worked with segregationist Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond to pass “tough on crime” legislation that targeted black communities with punitive criminal justice policies while promoting mass incarceration and harsh punishment for nonviolent crimes. At one point Biden declared that every “major crime bill since 1976 that’s come out of this Congress, every minor crime bill, has had the name of the Democratic senator from the state of Delaware — Joe Biden.”

One of the leading dissenters to Biden’s “tough on crime” agenda was Sanders, who Vox noted was “an early critic of mass incarceration and punitive criminal justice policies."

...the 1994 Crime Bill was STRONG enough!

In 1995 Democrats recognized a flaw in the bill, that the penalties for crack cocaine were much higher than those for powder cocaine. So, they proposed reworking the bill to equalize the penalties by reducing those for crack cocaine. However, Sanders insisted that instead of lowering those penalties, the penalties for powder cocaine should be RAISED to the level of crack. Sanders wanted to make the bill stronger!!

This isn't the only instance. The other day, for example, someone was attacking Bernie for voting the same way as Biden on some nuclear waste bill.

I don't get the argument, really. Like if you're trying to attack Bernie to support Biden, wouldn't it be better to find something bad that Bernie voted for, but Biden didn't?

That is why I find it a bit curious. I don’t think people are going to find the idea that Sanders advocates more “tough on crime” policies than Biden to be credible. And I think it’s difficult to paint him as inconsistent, particularly when he has been criticized as a dogmatist or inflexible.

I've defended others too, like recently when some right-winger attacked Warren over her college debt plan.

It's weird that you have an issue with me defending Sanders, he's one of our candidates, and right now, at least according to the betting odds, he's the favorite. Why wouldn't I defend the most likely person to be opposing Trump?

history of attacking Democrats with double standards. The better analogy would be if Biden attacked Democrats, but hid or ignored that he voted for the same things that they did — then try to raise money over that lie or omission. Your current analogy isn’t even remotely the same thing.

I do like his voting record, it's the best in the field. I don't like that his campaign has people who voted for Jill Stein on it.

But regardless, I think we can all agree that it's silly to attack Bernie for casting the exact same vote as Biden, right?

Crime was astronomically high in the late-1980s/early-1990s. There were 2,000+ murders in NYC alone in 1990. Everyone, including liberals, were calling for tougher anti-crime measures at the time.

For those here interested solely in making Bernie's position on this then critical issue (Crime routinely ranked as the #1 concern of Americans in polls back then) appear extreme in retrospect, please note both Hillary's (super-predators, anyone?) and Biden's stances on this issue at the time. Thank you.
