A cascade of polls released over the weekend have Bernie Sanders challenging Joe Bidens frontrunner status, surpassing Biden in key early states as the national horse race tightens up.

In a poll conducted in Iowa by The New York Times/Siena College that was released Saturday, the Vermont senator sat at the top of the pack at 25 percent. Three other candidates were battling for second place Pete Buttigieg, Biden and Elizabeth Warren all within three points of one another. Buttigieg was at 18 percent, to Bidens 17 percent and Warrens 15 percent.

A survey in New Hampshire which votes eight days after the Iowa caucuses tells a similar story: Sanders has staked out a narrow lead, with a battle for second. A NBC News/Marist poll in the Granite State that was released on Sunday has Sanders at 22 percent among likely primary voters. Buttigieg was at 17 percent Biden was at 15 percent and Warren was at 13 percent. Amy Klobuchar, the senator from Minnesota, rounds out the candidates who finished in double digits with 10 percent.
A second New Hampshire poll released Sunday gives a wider lead to Sanders. In the CNN/University of New Hampshire poll, Sanders is at 25 percent among likely primary voters, to Bidens 16 percent, Buttigiegs 15 percent and Warrens 12 percent.
Regardless of who they support, a plurality of voters believe Sanders will win the first-in-the-nation primary. Thirty-nine percent said they believed the Vermont senator will win the state, compared to 22 percent for Biden and 12 percent for Warren.
In past cycles, the first two states have been determinative for the race for the nomination. A narrow win by Sanders in both states, where he currently sits in pole position, could push him toward the nomination as he builds momentum.

(67,782 posts)Not true.
In 2008 Obama won Iowa, Clinton won New Hampshire - Obama was the nominee
In 2016 Clinton won Iowa (by less than 1/2%), Sanders won New Hampshire - Sanders had Clinton was the nominee
The first two states have not been determinative in at least the last two cycles.

(67,782 posts)....didn't win both Iowa and New Hampshire, in one the eventual nominee didn't win either.
Once again:
In 2016 Clinton won Iowa (by less than 1/2%), Sanders won New Hampshire - Clinton was the nominee (tied 1, lost 1)
In 2008 Obama won Iowa, Clinton won New Hampshire - Obama was the nominee (won 1 of the two)
In 2004 Kerry won both - Kerry was the nominee (won both)
In 2000 Gore won both - Gore was the nominee (won both)
In 1992 Harkin won Iowa, Tsongas won New Hampshire - Clinton was the nominee (won neither)
That covers 24 years. You can go back further if you want.

(1,846 posts)The Democratic Party is a big tent party.
Iowa and New Hampshire are 2 states loaded with white people.
What happens in those states means NOTHING.
They should be relegated to second tier primaries / caucuses.
Watch who wins the diverse states...those are your frontrunners.
You would think on a site like this folks would know better.

(67,782 posts)...in proportional primaries is virtually meaningless unless it's won convincingly. In your example, California, if nothing changes Biden will win 152 delegates, Sanders 152 delegates, and Warren 112.
It's states where Biden has huge leads that will determine the nominee:
SC Biden +20.2
GA Biden +18.3
FL Biden +19.5
TX Biden +12.5
PA Biden +11.7
VA Biden +13.5
Sanders has no such leads in any significant states.
