Bernie's Candle

"Yet it is far better to light the candle than to curse the darkness."
~Unknown

Yes, Joe Rogan has said some despicable and hurtful things (i.e., trans-phobic, anti-Islamic, misogynist, racist), but he has made a redeeming choice in supporting Bernie Sanders, who has been a fighter for inclusion, equality and justice his entire life. Does anyone really believe Bernie condones the asinine statements JR has made in the past?

Bernie, like virtually all of us Democrats and liberals, wants to do whatever it takes to defeat our narcissist-in-chief in November because we all know the dire consequences of another four years of Drumpf. Would it be a winning strategy to in-effect denounce the votes of millions of JR's listeners because we are right and they are wrong? How much better of a strategy might it be to embrace the support of those who have been ignorant in the past? Or should we set-up a purity test at polling places to ask people whether they have ever made a bigoted statement?

I am noticing a pattern I observed in 2016. When you can no longer adequately oppose a candidate based on their character, policy proposals, or record, the last resort is to wage a campaign against their supporters. To attach the label of "Bernie-Bros" implies that the preponderance of Bernie's backers are white and male [which they most certainly are not] with poor social etiquette and racist and misogynistic tendencies. Such branding is a way of vilifying Sanders' backers and thus the candidate himself by association.

I now hesitate before clicking into this site because of the negativity herein. Perhaps I'm being Pollyannaish, but I do think those of us who have chosen a candidate have been inspired by our selection to some degree. Would it be asking too much to focus more on inspirations and aspirations and less on gripes and gotchas?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

It is very discouraging to hear the repetitive negativism …….. Good news for Joe from Iowa (USA TODAY-Suffolk) Biden 25% ..Bernie 19% ...Buttigieg 18% ...Warren 13% …..In the 2 previous Iowa Polls (June & October ) conducted by Suffolk U, Bernie was registered at 9 % in both … Bernie is +10 % in this most unfriendly of Bernie Iowa polls ...

At least I think so. People grow and change. I know people who were previously GOP and now support Dems, and yeah, I don't think "redemption" is the wrong word for that. Maybe there's a better word, but that's the idea. People previously did wrong the wrong thing, now they are doing the right thing, or at least better things than before.

If a conservative is to redeem himself publicly, that would require his acknowledgement that all people should have access to & be allowed to pursue the American Dream without undue burdens, and an acknowledgement that conservatism has been a deliberate & abject failure at providing that. To do otherwise is phony and disingenuous.

I haven't seen Rogan even pretend to make such a statement, or Sanders requesting one.
