Hickenlooper: 'I'm not cut out to be a senator'

Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, campaigning Saturday in Iowa ahead of a possible presidential run, dismissed the idea that he might end up running for Senate instead in 2020.

“I’m not cut out to be a senator,” said Hickenlooper, who added that he loves putting administrative teams together. “Senators don’t build teams. Senators sit and debate in small groups, which is important, right? But I’m not sure that’s my — I’m a doer. That’s what gives me joy.”

Hickenlooper has his eyes set on a possible presidential bid. The former Denver mayor is considering joining the crowded field of 2020 presidential candidates and traveled to Iowa for the weekend to meet voters here.

At earlier campaign stops, Hickenlooper framed Senate Democrats currently running for president as thinkers, dreamers and debaters. The difference, he said, is that he has actually gotten things done.

2. As a native Coloradan, Hickenlooper doesn't have that "it" factor.

Nope, he's one and done. Frackenlooper won't get much.

4. While I get the appeal of governors, I can't see Hickenlooper gaining traction in this field.

Even if he and I do share a birthday.

I don't see Inslee gaining much traction either, but at least he would bring a lot of attention to the issue of climate change.

Plus, both Hickenlooper and Inslee will be close to 70. I think the only candidate pushing 70 and then some who has a shot is Biden, simply because he was Obama's VP (and I wouldn't bet on Biden becoming our nominee either). The last 5 Democratic presidents averaged 48 years of age upon taking office. And nearly every president has been 62 or younger when taking office. This country, and our electorate especially, has demonstrated a preference for younger candidates.

Kerry (61) in 2004 and Hillary (69) in 2016. Both should have defeated the wretched candidates they were up against.

Inslee and Hickenlooper are fine. Biden is closer to 80 than he is 70 now. He shouldn't be lumped with them.

7. Clinton was the younger of 2 options. O'Malley was never going to gain traction.

And neither Kerry nor Clinton became president, though Clinton was cheated in more ways than one (and was the younger of the 2 general election candidates).

I think it's fair to say Biden has a much better chance than either Inslee or Hickenlooper. But age is a factor for all 3.

8. I don't believe Biden is going to do as well (if he *ugh* runs) as everyone thinks.

He's not a very good presidential candidate. He wasn't in 1988 or in 2008. There's something about him that people don't find appealing once they're exposed to him. There's a reason why his previous two presidential bids went absolutely nowhere.

Inslee and Hickenlooper have never been tested on a national level, so I can't say how they'll come across.

In 2008, Biden got just 4% in Iowa and dropped out. In 1988, he dropped out early following various accusations.

Obama resurrected Biden's political career with his strategic VP selection. Otherwise, nobody would be talking about nominating someone who will be 78 in 2020, who has a penchant for gaffes and his history with the Thomas-Hill hearing (in this Me Too era). In fact, people would think it a completely absurd notion.

But the fact of the matter is, Biden was VP and is linked to Obama. So, he most definitely has a better chance than 2 people who most have never even heard of (people who would be competing with Biden for more or less the same constituency, I imagine). And Biden would benefit from the first primary being in New Hampshire, given that he represented Delaware in the Senate for many years.

10. This is how governors have framed it

since political life began. It is their USP. Especially in a field that - if Bullock and Inslee take a pass - might contain only a solitary governor.

Regarding the 'it factor' it is yet to be determined exactly what the electorate are looking for this election. We sometimes run the risk of mistakenly fighting the last war. The antidote to Trump may not be flashy, glamorous or a thrill-a-minute, it may just be a slightly plodding, efficient, experienced, practical, governor.

I think Hickenlooper can beat Trump, but whether he has any path to the nomination is harder to discern. His voice certainly deserves to be heard, though, and he would be a valuable addition to an already excellent field.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
