Congratulations to our presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden!
How record-high turnout in Iowa could shuffle the 2020 race
PoliticoIt might not be enough to blunt the momentum swinging nationally to Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. But for Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar, high turnout in the Iowa caucuses may be their only chance.
One week from today in Iowa, Warren and Buttigieg will flex their organizational advantages for the first time, and Klobuchar will test the extent of her appeal to rural Democrats. Their prospects are pinned to uncertain turnout models in which Sanders does not dramatically expand his base and Biden does not consolidate moderate support.
The national conversation seems to be moving past Pete, past Elizabeth, to Bernie and Biden. Thats where I think everythings heading, or returning, said Doug Herman, who was a lead mail strategist for Barack Obamas 2008 and 2012 campaigns. Its kind of a reset back to the beginning of the race.
But if there is high turnout in Iowa, he said, It may help the other candidates: It may be what they need to stay viable.

(92,381 posts)1. The problem with the caucus is you have to be present in person, and that discriminates against
those who have mobility problems, or cannot attend in person. It also makes it difficult for a secret ballot.
From my perspective, anything can happen with a caucus.

2+ million people can have so much power. No matter what, everyone should stay in.

(23,364 posts)5. Is Iowa a good predictor of the nomination?
It seems like a strange place, disproportionately white, with a caucus system instead of a primary.
I like it, it gets the candidates out talking to people, and the result is not numerically insurmountable.
If the year started with CA, FL, NY, then the initial big money would be favored. We probably would have had Pres HRC instead of BHO.

What Iowa does show is a candidates some ability to reach beyond the current Democratic base.
