Republicans weaponize Trump team attacks on Biden

The Senate impeachment trial isn’t exactly good press for President Donald Trump. But Senate Republicans says it’s also hurting former Vice President and 2020 hopeful Joe Biden.

The second day of the president's opening arguments in the impeachment trial took a sharp turn, when Trump attorneys Pam Bondi and Eric Herschmann spent a significant portion of their time on the Senate floor arguing that Biden should be investigated for corruption.

Bondi primarily focused on Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and his role on the board of Ukrainian gas company Burisma while his father was vice president and in charge of Ukraine matters. Trump's team has presented no evidence that Biden used his role as vice president to benefit his son nor alleged anything improper other than the "appearance of a conflict."

But Senate Republicans used the concerted attack on Biden to raise questions about his political viability.

“Iowa caucuses are this next Monday evening and I’m really interested to see how this discussion today informs and influences the Iowa caucus voters, those Democratic caucus goers, will they be supporting vice president Biden at this point?” asked Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa).

“I was watching Elizabeth [Warren] and Bernie [Sanders] and Michael [Bennet] and Amy [Klobuchar] and they were really eyes wide open during that part of it," said Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), referring to the four senators vying for the Democratic nomination sitting as jurors in the trial. "I think it's going to be harmful. It can't be a positive. Certainly not in November if he's the nominee and I think even in terms of getting the nomination."

Especially when there is nothing to be worried about. People will think you're a concern troll. I'm not saying that. OK. But as soon as someone does concern that happens.

(since we're pretending worry is something other than what it is, I thought I'd play that little game too... disappointed though it's not very fun-- which is what games are for)

But just an FYI: Try 'concern' in place of 'worry.' It sounds more convincing.

Common Cause Files Complaint Against Pro-Bernie Sanders Group Our Revolution for Violating Soft Money Ban

According to Our Revolution’s tax returns showing contribution amounts but not contributor names, data compiled and first reported by the Associated Press, from 2016 to 2018 Our Revolution raised almost $1 million dollars from contributors who gave in excess of the applicable $5,000 contribution limit, including multiple contributions of between $100,000 and $300,000. Our Revolution has not disclosed any of its contributors to the FEC, as required by federal campaign finance law.

“Americans expect and deserve to have our campaign finance laws enforced and they expect political organizations to abide by the law, regardless of their political views,” said Paul Seamus Ryan, Common Cause vice president for policy and litigation. “The facts surrounding Our Revolution, including its founding by Sen. Sanders, its receipt of six-figure contributions, its failure to disclose donors to the FEC, and its political spending in Iowa and elsewhere, point to a clear violation of the federal soft money ban. Common Cause is a nonpartisan organization and we work to hold power accountable regardless of party affiliation or policy positions. It is critically important that the soft money ban be enforced, or outside groups founded by candidates will become a commonplace means to evade contribution limits and disclosure requirements.”

...so things won't be a shock, if heaven forbid, something comes out about Our Revolution that is as disturbing as what came out last January about the $30,000 sexual harrassment payment paid by the Sanders campaign...

...that must have been very difficult...

...however those who were paying attention, of which I'm sure you are one, did have an inkling of something amiss at Our Revolution when eight important founding staffers resigned from Our Revolution just as it was getting started, in part because they felt that the way that Jeff Weaver set up the organization's legal status to take dark money went against what they believed about campaign finance reform when they joined the organization....

But while the establishment of the new group, Our Revolution, had been eagerly awaited by many of his most ardent supporters, it has been met with criticism and controversy over its financing and management.

A principal concern among backers of Mr. Sanders, whose condemnation of the campaign finance system was a pillar of his presidential bid, is that the group can draw from the pool of “dark money” that Mr. Sanders condemned for lacking transparency.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/25/us/politics/bernie-sanders-our-revolution-group.html

...I have to wonder if OR staffers will come forward like those brave women and men did last January....

..Sunshine is the best disinfectant and transparency shouldn't worry those who have nothing to hide, right?...

....

...I'll be thinking about you...
