Sanders presidential campaign and allies have highlighted similar remarks by Joe Biden to attack the former vice president and make the explosive charge that Biden was an outspoken proponent of slashing the program.
With Iowas first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses less than a week away, Sanders remarks from decades ago are surfacing as a counterpunch to the criticism of Biden, as the two top candidates in the Democratic race escalate a feud over the nations most popular entitlement, an issue that has particular reach among older voters.
..................................................
Sanders allies have specifically highlighted Bidens past use of the term adjustments a word they say was deployed as a euphemism for cuts.
Yet Sanders himself used the word in an election-year opinion article about Social Security that ran in The Burlington Free Press in 1996.
As our population ages, Sanders wrote, it is clear that we will have to make incremental adjustments in Social Security taxes and benefits as Congress has done in the past.
................................
That includes a major 1983 bill signed into law by Reagan that came as the program was on the brink of insolvency. It raised taxes on working families, froze benefit increases for six months and gradually raised the age at which retirees can receive full benefits from 65 to 67.
During a 1999 press conference, Sanders went further, praising the 1983 law as a good example of people coming together to enact a solution without draconian changes.
We should remember that in 1982, Social Security was within a few months a few months of not being able to pay out all benefits owed to Americans, Sanders said at the time. And then people came together and said of course we want to save Social Security. They worked together, and they did.

(68,586 posts)Warren could take Iowa, and I hope she beats Sanders like a drum...yeah I want my guy to win...but she is my second choice and I don't want Sander's and his campaigns attacks on her to succeed in any way. I say this as a woman...not because I support a different candidate.

(20,709 posts)administration's proposal to cut cost of living increases. Right now Biden, to his credit, is firmly against SS cuts. He hasn't always been.
But you and I are never going convince each other of anything. It's the voters, and when it comes to SS, it's clear Bernie has been the most consistently opposed to cuts and in favor of increases. It's obvious. There's no such thing as a "pro-austerity democratic socialist".

(68,586 posts)cut Social Security either...except those who will vote for Sanders no matter what...And the constant lies, half truths, out of context shit and old shit which the Sanders campaign offers almost daily is really going to be bad for Sander's in the end. And his is chance of getting AA vote is pretty much over with the Rogan endorsement. He may also lose Moveon and all major LGBTQ organizations...he better hope that Rogan's dudes (like the proud boys) actually take the trouble to vote for him in the primary. It is pretty much a given they won't vote for him in the General.

(32,640 posts)You keep whacking away at that straw man, and it's threadbare. Give up.
People can ignore his own words all they want, but his record is clear. He did the very thing he accused Biden of - in a misrepresentation.
