(CNN)Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar said she's not entering an alliance with any of her rivals, including the campaign of former Vice President Joe Biden, whose aides have raised the idea of forging a pact at next week's Iowa caucuses if one of them isn't viable in certain precincts across the state
"I'm not even getting to that point yet. I want to be viable in every precinct," Klobuchar told CNN on Tuesday night in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The conversations underscore the urgency Biden is facing as he is locked in a tight battle with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is closing the Iowa caucus campaign with a late surge.
A candidate needs 15% of the vote to remain viable in the caucus at their precinct location, as determined by the amount of people participating in that location. If a candidate isn't viable, their voters can realign to another viable candidate or band together to form a group in support of another candidate that meets the threshold.

(146,317 posts)the Iowa caucuses. She is very likely not to be viable, except in a few precincts. She's trying hard to maintain a chance to win a few delegates in Iowa, but she may end up with none at all in that crowded race. In precincts where she is not viable, her supporters will move to another candidate. She will probably be watching closely to see which candidate that is, and it's likely to be Biden or Warren, depending on the precinct.
After Iowa, Amy will have decisions to make, I'm certain, since that's the only state she really has any chance of getting delegates.

(1,812 posts)If this trend continues until Monday she , is going to reach that 15% threshold in large parts, or perhaps all of the state of Iowa . ..This happens all the time in the Iowa Caucus .In 2016 , the final DM Poll had Marco Rubio at 15%, he ended up with 23% of the vote ...In 2012 , The final DM Poll had Santorum at 15% ...He won the Iowa Caucus with 25% of the vote

(1,086 posts)Iowa and New Hampshire have learned their place in the process. Who they want to see move forward plays a part in their choices. That will play against Biden to some extent because he is the national frontrunner and will move on regardless.
