Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBernie Sanders' Political Revolution Is Long Overdue
As he did in 2016, Bernie is offering something unique to the political landscape: a transformative vision for a more just and equitable country, and a renewal of American democracy.
His movement is built upon four central tenets:
1.The American political system is currently broken, unable to respond to the needs of the people and the planet.
2.There needs to be a political realignment along lines of economic self-interest, uniting the working class.
3.That realignment, combined with a powerful appeal to common-sense morality (anti-racist, anti-war, pro-environment, universal inclusion), will build a new progressive majority.
4.Even so, there must also be a revival of citizen participation in politics, lest the movement be crushed by big-money interests.
Sanders is correct on all four fronts. Until such a program is successfully implemented, Americas endemic social and political crises will continue unabated.

(42,641 posts)As to Sanders' points,
1) Per the SCOTUS, money equals speech. And as long as Buckley v Valeo and Citizens United v FEC stand, the system will remain unresponsive to the needs of the bottom 90%. The only way that can change is if those SCOTUS decisions are overturned, or legislated away. And the way to insure the second is to inspire massive voter turnout.
2) Class based politics is the way the rich have always operated, even as they insist, against all evidence, that the US has no class based political/economic system.
3) Anything that divides us, be it racism, or sexism, or any form of intolerance, weakens us and allows the rich to dominate US politics.
4) This position, as I referenced in #2, is essential if any gains are not to be only temporary. The rich have long term plans. The seeds for the Trump Administration, and GOP politics in general, were planted by the rich in the late 1960s as their response to the movements for civil and sexual and racial justice that were growing.

(43,049 posts)the 20th Century. William Jennings Bryan, Robert La Follette and Teddy Roosevelt himself could not get a third of the population to follow them.
They addressed serious problems of the time, like the trusts, massive agricultural losses, banks twisting the knot... Much worse than what we have now. Corruption at all levels was endemic, too. Much of the law we have today came from the excesses of that era, but those who fought for justice back then never obtained full power.

(16,863 posts)This fantasy that somehow "when the revolution comes" the GOP is just going to suddenly bow down and acquiesce to anything and everything that Sanders is proposing is just that...fantasy. We need a nominee who both sees the world as it really is while at the same time how we want the world to be and has realistic plans for accomplishing those goals.

Once again the top marginal tax rate was over 90% every year Eisenhower was in office.....Ike being a Republican for those who dont know. Now we have democrats saying that is reckless thinking. What a difference 60 years can make.

Campaigns are not revolutions. POTUS is not an office that works will with a disruptor in it... as we've seen.
Those who effected real revolutionary change did it in the streets (MLK), in the Courts (Thurgood Marshall) or in popular entertainment (documentary makers, Musicians like Woody Guthrie and Aretha Franklin, Writers like Upton Sinclair) and POTUS is a diplomatic and managerial position. The job description, metrics of success and timelines for the activist and the politician are very different.
MLK didn't run for office. He understood that the revolution wasn't going to come from Capitol Hill, but by being in the streets, inspiring and leading the people, who would then pressure Capitol Hill.
He needed a savvy, arm twisting, establishment POTUS in place to working in tandem to convince Capitol Hill to respond to the real revolutionary - who believed that voting was a civic duty as well as a right.
Bernie believes that he will be both the revolutionary and the POTUS, but it just doesn't work that way in real life.
Bernie didn't even to vote until he ran for office.

(3,163 posts)...political revolution is way long overdue...
" Before I turn to that evidence, however, lets make clear what it would mean for American politics if Sanders were to triumph this November: We could begin to meaningfully deal with climate change, wealth inequality, the housing and health care crises, and perhaps wind down our forever wars in the Middle East; under a moderate Democrat, nothing will get done. (32,640 posts)Bernie would beat Trump," when the two have never actually gone head to head in a GE. Things change when reality rears its ugly head.
Like the reality of the GOP turning it's guns on Sanders the nominee, instead of his primary rivals while promoting him behind the scenes as a primary candidate.
See also: Many who were self-described Elizabeth Warren fans, and said they would totally vote for her if she ran were calling her every name in the book within an hour after she endorsed HRC.

(145,313 posts)I have never taken sanders seriously due to a complete lack of legislative accomplishments of sanders and the fact that I do not understand sanders voter revolution The NYT also did not understand how sanders voter revolution works
Link to tweet
Like the NYT, I have questions about this voter revolution concept. I have asked sanders supporters to explain this concept to me and so far no one seems to know how this voter revolution will work in the real world https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1287&pid=430371
64. Exactly how does sanders voter revolution work in the real world?
It is my understanding that even sanders has acknowledged that he cannot adopt his platform unless he holds rallies and this voter revolution occurs. Is this correct? How does this voter revolution work in the real world? Again as I understand this concept, so many new voters will rise up and force the GOP to be reasonable. Is this correct? How many new voters does it take to accomplish this goal and where are these voters? How will these new voters force the GOP to be reasonable when so many GOP officeholders are in gerrymandered districts? Will these new voters move to these districts in time to vote for sanders platform? If these new voters are real, then why are theses new voters not showing up in the polls? New voters in such large numbers so as to cause the GOP to be reasonable should show up in polling. Are these new voters waiting for something? If these new voters really exist in the real world, why has sanders not used these new voters to get some meaningful legislation passed?
I look forward to answers to these questions
sanders interview with the NYT may have gone better if he had explained how this revolution would work in the real world. I am still curious

(787 posts)Actual support of Bernie would happen, if he proposed small changes.
Senator Sanders doesn't want small changes to get the goal. He wants a 110 yard run to the end zone at kickoff. And that won't happen, Americans, humans, can't make huge leaps. Rs have been making small changes since Nixon... Even during the Obama Administration Rs drug us to the right with their small changes. We haven't been able to stop it, just slow the move to the right.
That is why electing a, so called moderate, is important. An every day Joe, someone you could have a beer with after work. Someone that could make small changes to the left, and America can see how the left is helping them day to day....
I got off track there. In 2007, or there about, Senator Sanders proposed $15 min wage, we had just gotten $7.25, more than double, and he couldn't get it going. Here we are 13 years later and still no $15 min wage. Hell it's still $7.25 federally. If he had proposed small changes over, say 10 years, we could have $15-16 min wage now.
