UFCW 21 endorses Bernie Sanders; Medicare For All
United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 21 (UFCW 21), the largest private-sector union in the state and the largest UFCW local in the country, is announcing endorsements of Bernie Sanders for president and Medicare for All.
UFCW 21 has long been at the forefront of advancing the rights and dignity of working people, and its democratically elected member executive board voted Tuesday night to make the endorsements because its members understand what is at stake for workers in the upcoming election, according to a UFCW 21 news release.
Bernie Sanders has by far the most pro-worker labor agenda of any candidate, and we have already seen him use his platform during this campaign to support organizing in the industries we represent, said Faye Guenther, president of UFCW 21, in the news release. As a union, our fundamental goal is to expand worker democracy and power. We are so excited to see a candidate committed to expanding the electorate and inspiring even more people to engage with the democratic process, both in their workplaces and in this election.
Bernie understands that even health care workers dont always have good health care plans, said Jose Hernandez, UFCW 21 executive board member and emergency department assistant at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. As someone who works in an ER, I see the effects of our broken health care system every day, as patients skip getting the care they need because they cant afford it, leading to worse health outcomes and higher costs for everyone. And as a union member, Medicare for All relieves us of the burden of long, drawn-out fights to maintain our health care plans, freeing working people from the crushing consequences of getting sick and opening doors for wage increases and other benefits.

The biggest indie rock gig of the year is a Bernie Sanders rally
The buzziest indie rock tour of 2020 is shaping up to be the Democratic campaign trail. Recently, a number of bands beloved by people who were in college circa 2010 have thrown their weight behind Bernie Sanders, playing at his rallies in states with early primaries.
Today, The Strokes announced theyd be taking the stage with Sanders at a rally in New Hampshire on February 10. We are honored to be associated with such a dedicated, diligent and trustworthy patriot and fellow native New Yorker, frontman Julian Casablancas said in a statement. As the only truly non-corporate candidate, Bernie Sanders represents our only chance to overthrow corporate power and help return America to democracy. This is why we support him, the band added.
A week ago, both Bon Iver and Vampire Weekend announced theyd be playing sets at Sanders rallies in Iowa just ahead of the states caucuses on Monday, February 3. Bon Iver will perform at the Horizon Events Center in Clive, Iowa, this Friday, with Vampire Weekend appearing in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, February 1. Glancing quickly at the Iowa weather forecast heres hoping Ezra Koenig puts Unbearably White on his setlist.

But then I started thinking about the optics of massive turnout at Sanders rallies and Rock the Vote events in Iowa and New Hampshire. Young people really could propel him to the White House and maybe even force establishment Democrats to take a Sanders presidency seriously. They're certainly spooked by the revolutionary energy: "The air buzzed with the intoxicating collective energy unique to social movements on the rise," New York Times opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg wrote of the vibe at a Sanders rally in Iowa last weekend featuring Portugal. The Man.
