despite it working well within its own tolerance, and despite those rules being known prior to the caucus.

(I get it... Bernie's huGE suRgE didn't take him over the top, so you place the responsibility of his failure on the process... as Sacred Cows are inerrant.)

The Caucus procedures seem a little arcane to me, but it is what it is. It seems that Mayor Pete was a lot of people's second choice, which explains his success. Sanders has a lot of supporters, but I do not think he was a lot of people's second choice. People seem to either be all in for Bernie, or all against him. It is an interesting process, but it is kind of exhausting. I am starting to think that we should just go to a National Primary. One night, everyone votes, we choose a candidate. The political season seems to be never ending. And we are just getting started. I would rather that we had a sprint instead of a marathon.

Given how close the popular vote is, that's reasonable. Where it gets a little screwy is Biden being projected to walk away with 4 delegates to Klobuchar's 1, even though Klobuchar is closer to Biden than Buttigieg is to Sanders in vote total.

The NYT projects 13 pledged delegates for both PB and BS, 10 for EW, 4 for JB and 1 for AK.
