Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumJoe Biden grabbed my friend in a bear hug & she still tears up when she talks about it
Last year Biden was the speaker at one of the DFL's (Democratic Farmer Labor party) big annual dinners. My friend, "Mary" and her late husband have always been the most dedicated of volunteers and someone comped Mary two of the expensive photo op tickets to the dinner.
So, she's standing in line waiting to shake Biden's hand and get the picture taken and things are moving pretty quickly, no one is getting a chance to really say anything to Biden and Biden is just smiling and saying hello, thanking people for coming. Mary's turn comes, the picture gets taken and then Ken Martin, the state party chair, says "Mary just lost her husband to cancer."
Everything stops. Joe, takes her hands, extends clearly sincere sympathy, she tears up a bit and Biden "Can I give you a hug?" (Note, he asked) and he just enveloped her in a caring, warm bear hug. Then talks to her for another couple minutes.
I haven't decided who I'm supporting, but I do believe that Joe Biden is a caring person and, maybe all the losses he has experienced, has made him a man who needs human touch. True, in this age, he needs to be more aware of the circumstances, but in my friend's case, it was a needed and appreciated hug.

(6,229 posts)the fly over states, the Blue collar workers (Biden has always been close to them & they know trump has screwed that.) and the electoral college. That's all that matters. Biden running with a progressive woman (Harris?) would be a formidable ticket. Winning is all that matters.

(8,652 posts)What a coincidence. Lucy Flores sat on the BOD of our revolution and "felt uncomfortable" for 5 years until she just had to report that discomfort just a couple of weeks ahead of the Biden for President announcement.

(47,487 posts)I don't remember whether it was as his role of a VP, or a senator, he would welcome all the new senators hug all the family members I remember he once happily hugged the grandma..
The point is that if a woman feels uncomfortable, that's her right. There is no point here in anyone saying that they believe her or not. The only question is, as usual, the timing.

(8,955 posts)compassion for another's suffering (lesser or greater) can do to bring about healing. He offers the same to others when he perceives need (whether a kind word, a touch or a prayer). Joseph Biden is the healer this nation needs. He is old. He is tired. But Duty calls. I believe he will answer the call. Joseph Robinette Biden is a human being. He knows the difference between right and wrong. May he be blessed in his work.

(51,611 posts)My family (3 generations of Dems) thought my idea of a Biden-Harris team was a good idea when I mentioned it at a family dinner last fall. Our side lost a life long Dem with my dad's death. I hate writing that...it makes it seem too real. Oh geez, here I go again...waterworks and my nose is all chapped and sore already.

(51,611 posts)that my dad didn't like getting attention or having a "fuss" made over him which I understand and will respect. My mom has only told some neighbors and will let family and friends know about it next week since she needs to be left alone for a while. We are unusual in some ways I guess. Thank you for your kind words and thoughts!

(24,007 posts)...right or wrong, nor any timetable. Something I learned from my mom, some years after my younger brother and only sibling died in 1978 in a scuba diving adventure gone wrong, was that she wished people hadn't been afraid to talk about him after he died. When people would share a memory, it offered her some comfort that he was not forgotten.
People always want to know if there is anything they can do in the aftermath of the death of a beloved family member. If, but only if, it would be comforting to you or your mom, you could let friends and family know that it would be OK to talk about your dad. My mom said she knew people didn't talk about my brother because they feared making her sad, but her answer to that was that"I couldn't be any sadder than I already am, so talking about him doesn't make it worse."
Wishing you strength and serenity.

(51,611 posts)I think that makes perfect sense, it does to me anyway. It helped when my little dog died and I was crying for months but when total strangers shared their stories and understood it did make me feel better in a way. I don't think it is "misery loves company" but just releasing your feelings which is healthy for most people.
Thank you so much!

Edit: Not implying Biden is rapey, just saying it is us, the democrats, who help these things linger.
