I will NOT suffer the Al Frankening of Joe Biden...a rant *UPDATED*

Last edited Thu Apr 4, 2019, 09:09 AM - Edit history (2)

This is what a STUNT looks like.

Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren are pretty close to "off my list" with Gilibrand, because anybody falling for this shit doesn't have what it takes to lead this nation out of this quagmire.

Also, I thank GOD every fucking day that the VA Gov and Lt. Gov. refused to step down when they tried to pull this shit on them.

Here's to hoping our nominees wake the fuck up.

<rant off>

*UPDATE* Facts matter...and so do motives.

Our friendly little accuser wrote this a while back, but very recently deleted it...WHY?

(start quote) "To President Putin, I say keep your eyes to the beautiful future and maybe, just maybe America will come to see Russia as I do, with eyes of love." (end)

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

That is not at all what is being reported, I've read CNN, MSNBC, WaPo and NYT and never once saw it reported that it was "a slow kiss to the back of the neck". All have said it was a brief kiss to the top of her head at a time when she was really nervous and showing it - far, far different than the slander you are so set on proving.

but, since the neck attaches to the back of the head, I don't see that as determinative... the point is that Flores described it as a BIG, SLOW kiss to the back area of her head while, at the same time, Joe was sniffing her hair. It was NOT a BRIEF kiss to the TOP of her head, as YOU misreported. Certainly, you can appreciate the difference... if you can't, I'm mystified, that's all I can say. Can you at least be big enough to admit YOUR mistake??

And why are you calling her a "Bernie surrogate"? She said she has endorsed no one yet, and she'd left the board of Our Revolution by May 2018.

https://www.thecut.com/2019/03/an-awkward-kiss-changed-how-i-saw-joe-biden.html

As I was taking deep breaths and preparing myself to make my case to the crowd, I felt two hands on my shoulders. I froze. “Why is the vice-president of the United States touching me?”

I felt him get closer to me from behind. He leaned further in and inhaled my hair. I was mortified. I thought to myself, “I didn’t wash my hair today and the vice-president of the United States is smelling it. And also, what in the actual fuck? Why is the vice-president of the United States smelling my hair?” He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head. My brain couldn’t process what was happening. I was embarrassed. I was shocked. I was confused. There is a Spanish saying, “tragame tierra,” it means, “earth, swallow me whole.” I couldn’t move and I couldn’t say anything. I wanted nothing more than to get Biden away from me. My name was called and I was never happier to get on stage in front of an audience.

It's happening again and I am worried. I'm not sure who I support: Biden, Harris, Klobucher and Budigieg are all definitely on my radar and I have hopes that someone will take a serious look at Castro as a running mate. Decorum seemed far from Biden’s mind when he went off-schedule to stop by the Cabinet Room on June 10, 2013. He slung an arm around my husband, who was about to be nominated by President Barack Obama as the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers; he hugged my in-laws, whom he had never met; and then he homed in on my kindergartner. The vice president sat down and whispered to my anxious kid about the small Schleich knight he was clutching. My son relaxed, and slumped back into Biden’s lap. At that point, an aide interrupted to say that Biden was overdue for a meeting with Kosovar Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi. Still, he refused to rush. He called over my daughter and his photographer for this photo:

Why am I telling another “Biden being Biden” story? Because I believe that the character of the person who occupies the Oval Office is of the utmost importance, and because I believe that Biden, far from a bad man, is an unusually good one.....

Biden’s disregard of this protocol is telling. He enters a room, just as he enters a debate about union rights or domestic violence, with a predisposition to lend an ear to the least powerful.

Judging from the reaction to the recent spate of Biden stories, time is up on avuncular attention, now interpreted as at best pernicious paternalism and at worst septuagenarian sexual harassment. In the cultural revolution under way in America, men like Biden are invited to offer their head if their prior actions deviated from the new norms.

No doubt, character counts. I, for one, admire Biden’s deviant decency.

As the author of the piece says, try an experiment: look at the photos and imagine, Paul Ryan's face instead of Biden's. Or Dick Cheney's.

And the fact the women are smiling doesn't mean they're enjoying the touching, the closeness of a man who is not a loved one. That's what women do, smile, because it is a public moment and we are taught not to embarrass anyone or make a scene. We wait for the moment to pass.

Sen. Chris Coons addressed a 2015 photo this weekend that captured a moment between his daughter and Joe Biden that critics have used as evidence of the former vice president's alleged inappropriate behavior.

In 2015, when Coons was being sworn in as a U.S. senator, a photo captured Biden leaning into Coons' teenage daughter, whispering in her ear and then kissing her on the head. To many, Coons' daughter seemed to be uncomfortable in the moment.

But Coons told The Washington Post this weekend that his daughter "did not think of it as anything."

This behavior of Biden's has been noted and commented on before, well into the past. He does far more touching and kissing of women and girls than is usual for a politician.

Look at those photos upthread. Look at the ones at this link: https://gawker.com/joe-biden-we-need-to-talk-about-the-way-you-touch-wome-1686648038

What would be your reaction if that were a woman politician doing all the coming up from behind and kissing men? Or kissing male constituents on the mouth? Or kissing a male usher on the mouth at a baseball game?

Not that you're ever likely to see a woman do such things. A woman can think herself the most affectionate person in the world, but she knows instinctively that such behavior would probably be interpreted sexually. Why shouldn't men likewise restrain themselves?

Coons, who has previously addressed the photo, told The Washington Post on Saturday that, in that moment, Biden was praising his daughter and telling her he could connect her with his daughter Ashley so they could talk about the challenges of having a parent in politics.
The senator added that his children view Biden to be a grandfather figure. The former vice president has been supportive of Coons' political career, campaigning for him in each of his races.
Coons' wife, Annie, is a close friend of Hallie Biden, the widow of Beau Biden.
“All three of my kids have known Joe their whole lives," Coons told The Post.
Stephanie Carter, the wife of former secretary of defense Ash Carter, published a post on the online site Medium Sunday, defending Biden and pushing back against critiques of his inappropriate behavior.

And there are plenty more videos of swearing in ceremonies at the link, where he stands behind little girls for the photo shoot. He repeatedly plays with their hair, fondles their faces. It's a thing with him, and it's creepy to watch one right after the other.

There's a clip of him giving Hillary Clinton a big bear hug and just not letting go. You can see her pat him on the arm twice as if to say Okay, Joe, that's enough. Sure she's laughing when she does it. Politicians always laugh and smile at one another when the cameras are rolling, that's what they do.

The stroking the hair, the squeezing the shoulders, the putting his face close up to women's and young girls' faces and whispering...it's some kind of compulsive behavior. Maybe after watching all the clips in a row you won't find it creepy, but I do. He should cut it out.

Here's hoping women stop tolerating it because men say they didn't mean anything by it. It's not what they MEAN that matters. It's the fact they don't think. Here's hoping men wake the fuck up, in your parlance.

I don’t necessarily fault Biden because he’s a man from a different generation and has expressed respect for the changing standards of behavior. What bothers me is all the DU sexists and misogynists telling women to shut up, saying they don’t care how women feel, and attacking Harris and Warren over this. They have clearly not learned anything from the 2016 election, and I fear that their misogyny will give us a second Trump term.

Not even up to the level of the Franken behavior, which I did not think was of a level to disqualify him. I thought he was someone who was sacrificed for the good of the party, and did that voluntarily, so that there could be no mistaking the party's position on sexual harassment.

It's a dicey issue, however, because people do misunderstand cues and gestures all the time, and such misunderstandings ought not to lead to accusations, especially after the initial shock. And yet, such sexual harassment can begin with just those kinds of gestures, and so someone who has experienced harassment might well over-react. And that ought to be taken in stride, too.

Rather than hearing about Biden's hair smelling habits, I'd like to know where he stands on a Green New Deal, raising taxes on billionaires, a higher minimum wage, and some of the financial reforms that Elizabeth Warren is proposing.

a picture can also tell a lie. The photo with Franken that you refer to was staged for the camera -- it wasn't for real. And how convenient that it was pulled out and put into circulation just after the Senator had torn a strip off Sessions......

Gillibrand and her fellow Senators and Reps should hang their heads in shame for the treatment they gave Franken. Perhaps they were simply jealous of him, since he proved himself way smarter than they have ever been.

As for Biden, give the guy a break. Having lost his wife and children at a very early age, he knows how important it is to cherish those who are alive. His showering of affectionate (non-sexual, non-violent) gestures to BOTH women and men proves it.

And BTW, I spoke at a fundraising event a few months ago. I was hugged by two people on the Foundation Board afterwards -- one was a woman I knew fairly well, and the other was a man whom I didn't especially know (or admire). They hugged me to say Thank you for my remarks. Was I offended? Of course not.

For pete's sake, women, grow the hell up!

another candidate or staff of a candidate, the GOP, individuals with their own motives, whoever - is trying to do a Karl Rove on Biden, which is to turn a strength into a weakness. Of all the candidates Biden probably gives the strongest impression of being a really decent, warm, honest person (which isn't to say some other candidates don't seem that way; just that Biden has such a long-standing nice-guy image). So, if you want to take him down, you want to ruin that image. What's the best way to puncture that image? Make him out to be a perv with wandering hands instead of a sweet guy who just likes to hug people (like Al Franken). Tack the whole thing disingenuously to the #MeToo movement and, you hope, there goes some of your strongest competition.

I am still steaming over the sexual swiftboating of my excellent Senator, Al Franken, and although I don't know whether Biden would be my first choice when the primaries get going I sure don't want to see him get the same treatment.

Tue Apr 2, 2019, 01:59 PM

This is going to destroy the metoo movement. Do we really want to coarsen our culture? By that I mean, I want to live in a culture where all the older people think of younger people like they would their own children. If that same "incident" had happened and she was his daughter, everyone would have applauded him for being such a supportive dad. There he was, traveling to an event to support this young lady, and as she was about to go onto a big stage, he affectionately showed his fatherly support. A beautiful gesture.
I want that to be the model for how people should behave. And not have it degraded down to "if you get anywhere near me, you are VIOLATING my space." Meaning we all have to be afraid of showing any affection to anyone. Ridiculous. AND if someone is mentally or emotionally damaged (and there are many reasons why people get damage) then they need to learn how to politely say that they are not comfortable with displays of affection. It should be up to them to correct the behavior and not up to everyone else in society to act like unfeeling robots.

Also very glad the 2 in VA didn't resign. Seems Dems have a habit of wringing our own out to dry, yet we have a POTUS and GOP corruption going on everyday.

Yes, part of that is that few of them care, or even begin to believe that anything short of rape is harassment whatsoever, but also the 'circular firing squad' aspect.

I will NEVER forgive ANYONE who and ANYTHING to do with even suggesting that Franken resign, they deserve Trump. Anyone who makes an issue of this deserves Trump2020 and Pence 2024.

If they've got a (D) support them, at least until we have the WH, and Senate.

Franken's acts were different from Biden's.

I think this whole thing is a hatchet job, but I don't conflate Franken with Biden in any sense.

Whoever started this mess may very well get what they want, which is causing Biden's popularity to fall and to discourage him from running.

Biden is handling this as well as he can with his statement about how all accusations must be heard. It doesn't mean that they all should be believed. It's a nuanced and smart position, and thinking people know this; but that isn't the majority of the electorate.

that's not to say a public apology is not in order, some words showing you've learned since your youth, but this pathetic caving before the ink is even dry has to stop. I remember when we were barely into Obama's term and Van Jones simply HAD to resign immediately, without any due course, for having the audacity to call Republicans "assholes"......for, you know, behaving like assholes with Obama.

We know they don't really give a fuck about what we did or do (from a stain on a blue dress and on) but us Dems are so damn clever that we are going to 'get ahead of it' and pull the carpet out from under our own member before they get to even try. That'll show them! Now with less members and dealing with the infighting that the latest reactionary action resulted in, everyone admires us for our "overreach just in case"...right?

Sometimes I wonder what kind of bubble these people live in that they can't even read their own base.

Or the Rupert Murdoch effect?

Never mind the careless way the MSM handles all of it: hyping for effect along
with clickbait headlines, with lots of opinions and scarcely any substantial fact, or background research.

The truth gets trampled in the stampede to "justice" amid self-righteous gloating.

We are Democrats, Damn it! We are supposed to be defending Truth and Justice for everyone . We are not supposed to rush out and lynch the accused.

We are DU and supposedly fact-based. I am beginning to have 2nd thoughts about that assertion.

And I will say I am disappointed that my preferred candidate Warren got baited into such a shallow assessment of the situation. I thought she would first consider the facts.

This is ridiculous.

Social clues are funny and sometimes hard to recognize.

Two examples -

The first is a family friend, my wife's old roommate, who double dated with her boyfriend when my wife and I were dating. The goodbye greeting was always hugs (initiated by her). She was shot in the head and we drifted apart (they live in a different community). A few years later I went to hug her at her boy's graduation, and she jumped back like I threatened her. Back to always letting the woman initiate a hug which I find uncomfortable anyway.

A few months back. A family friend of my mom that I met for the first time. Went to say goodbye at the end of the night. I stuck my hand out to shake, and the whole room was offended. She grabbed me and hugged me and our lips touched. Very uncomfortable.

My dad was a very touchy person (as well as my mom). I am not like that. My wife is not like that. My daughters are not like that. I barely hug my daughters. Not like my dad who would hug me all the time growing up.

So was my dad a creep? If my mom's friend decides to run for office, should I complain about the inappropriate touching?

For God's sake people, grow up.

Gillibrad was the face of the Frankening of Franken. She has accepted that moniker. Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, and Elizabeth Warren also jumped on that bandwagon. They all showed a lack of leadership in killing someone's career without so much as a phone call or asking questions about the (false) allegations.

Then some of them (Kamala Harris was first) jumped on the bandwagon to interfere in N Carolina's state elections to try to kick out the Governor, again without asking questions or even questioning whether it was her place to inject herself into a state's elections.

Now this. NO! Enough is enough.

He hasn't apologized or said he was sorry yet, for some inexplicable reason. Saying he didn't do it intentionally is an explanation but it's not an apology.

If he bumped into someone in the hall and they spilled their coffee, he would say he was sorry even though he did it unintentionally

The same reasoning would apply. To anyone he might have made uncomfortable, he's sorry.

Republican dirty tricks? Al Gore bought the line that Bill Clinton was radioactive and distanced himself from him. Barack Obama fired Van Jones and Shirley Sherrod and also dismantled ACORN because of Republican dirty tricks. Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything.
The Me Too movement opens the door to abuse by political adversaries. Democrats reflexively panic and demand apologies and resignations without a fair hearing out of fear that Republicans will use a false narrative against them.
Note to Democrats, especially the leadership: No matter the candidate or issue, Republicans will broadcast lies with their very effective propaganda operation.

195. Washington Post-Opinion: After his video, Biden may come out even stronger
Thu Apr 4, 2019, 02:07 PM
Apr 2019

By late Wednesday afternoon, his video tweet had received more than 66,000 likes.

It’s not clear this was even necessary. Other than journalists, it was hard to find anyone who honestly thought “Biden is a hugger” was news; it surely wasn’t new. Even Republicans had come to his rescue. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), in a reminder of the old Lindsey Graham, remarked, “I just want to say Joe Biden is my friend, and I know him very well, and whatever he did it may have been inappropriate but it was not driven by malice or misconduct.” Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) also vouched for him, as has Meghan McCain.

Biden conveyed in his message why he touches people — to soothe, empathize and encourage. In saying that he would resist the notion that politics has to be “antiseptic,” he showed that he’s in public service not for glory but to help others. In short, he helped voters remember the positive qualities he’s well known for, which even political opponents attest to.

197. In Defense of Joe Biden: A Hug When I Needed One
Fri Apr 5, 2019, 12:56 AM
Apr 2019

At age 33, I had been a life-long Republican. I worked for, what many might describe as the “dark side and/or Darth Vaders of politics”, including George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Sarah Palin. I was conservative in my upbringing, values, and beliefs. I stayed true to those feelings yet still found myself drawn to Joe Biden. Our affable, blunder-prone, yet seemingly oh-so-real Vice President.....

I was anxious, sad, and seriously swollen with emotion but was able to get a chance to meet the Vice President. Many of the local Democrats remarked “what are YOU doing here?” when I showed up in line at his photo opportunity. I explained my affection for VP Biden because of what I had been through, and no one blinked an eye, everyone understood. He was a good man. No matter your party.

When my turn came up to have my brief meet-and-greet and photo taken with Vice President Biden, I was nervous. Why AM I here?? But immediately, he knew my story (his staff had briefed him) and he brought me in for a long, big hug. It was exactly what I needed. We discussed Beau and my father. We talked about the recent loss of my mother — he understood family tragedy. He was close, nose to nose at times and hand in hand, but it was in that personal touch that I KNEW he was a human. Not a Vice President, or a politician, or someone that was giving a speech later that night. He was a real person, who had been through real things. Just like me. We must’ve talked for five minutes — far more than the paying Democrat contributors got! — but it was so genuine, no one would complain. Especially Mr. Biden, communicating and comparing stories with me was clearly a highlight for him amidst his political duties. I left with a giant smile on my face, the first in days, and was uplifted for a long time after. I met my hero, and he was exactly what I had expected him to be.

My point in telling this story is that, while Vice President Biden has a very personal and affectionate way about him, it is only because he loves people. He loves people’s stories. Man, woman, child. Father, mother, son, daughter, spouse. He knows people are hurting and can relate and offer genuine support. And human touch is the most basic form of relaying that. There is no ulterior motive — he just wants to get close to everyone. Because he cares about their stories. And is human. And THAT is what matters most and crosses all party lines.

Flores' credibility was already low with me, but now it's completely shot.

Yes, believe women ... but credibility DOES matter. Some women are just as capable as some men of being manipulative, lying cheats. The key is to listen first, then assess. Not just ignore claims flat out like was done in the past.

We listened, and assessed. Assessment in this case: politically based bullshit.

207. Early State Democrats Stand With Biden As Touching Scandal Falls Flat
Mon Apr 8, 2019, 07:49 PM
Apr 2019

Progressives and advisers to Bernie Sanders hoped that they could keep Biden out of the race with a scandal that centers around personal space. The scandal though never really dominated the news like they hoped it or accelerated enough to damage the former vice president’s potential candidacy. Biden is still leading in the way too early polling, and he has seen no erosion in his support since the touching scandal started.

The challenge that any Democratic candidate faces is that Joe Biden has deep roots and a huge national organization of party officials. Biden is beloved by the party rank and file, and it is going to take more than what his political adversaries tried to turn into a scandal to stop his candidacy.

After seeing the behavior of porn star paying off, Access Hollywood tape accused sexual assaulter Trump, Joe Biden’s behavior doesn’t rise to the level of disqualifying in the minds of many Democrats.

Democratic voters may choose a different nominee, but Joe Biden is showing why he is going to be hard to beat in 2020.

212. This so-called scandal/hit job failed

One almost sensed from the breathless coverage of women who decided years later to object to former vice president Joe Biden’s non-sexual hugs and pats and kisses on the head that they expected the media to think it would be a fatal or near-fatal blow to Biden’s presidential chances. Not only was it not fatal, it didn’t register as particularly relevant to most Democratic voters. He was atop the polls before these stories aired, and he is atop them now.

Biden has been in the public eye since the 1970s, and unlike Hillary Clinton, who claimed the public never really knew her, voters feel like they know Biden pretty darn well. Many voters don’t remember anything before his vice presidency, his demonstrably warm relationship with President Barack Obama, his remarkable dignity after the death of his beloved son Beau, and his emotional goodbye to the late senator John McCain. He has established a level of emotional intimacy with voters that few politicians attain. He’s the chatty next-door neighbor, the avuncular relative and the co-worker who remembers everyone’s birthday.

214. A woman I hadn't seen in awhile shared some sad news
Sat Apr 13, 2019, 12:35 PM
Apr 2019

*I am a woman. I have a Mexican side of the family, so touching is very prevalent in our interactions. The white side, not so much.

This woman told me that her fiance had died unexpectedly of a heart attack a few weeks before. She was visably distraught and I asked her if I could hug her. And she said "No". I wanted to hug her, it would make me feel good but I realize that touching is a TWO way interaction and if one side is not wanting it, that means it shouldn't happen.

I didn't hug her. I supported her in other ways that she was able to receive easier.

This isn't hard, people.

Frankly, I find these threads more about supporting a candidate no matter what to be strangely like supporters of other candidates. Like Trump or Sanders or Bill Clinton during Monica. And I supported Sanders and Clinton.
