Debate shows desperation of everyone but Bernie

Politico

There’s room for two or, at most, three at the top as the race reaches a critical phase.

By JOHN F. HARRIS

02/08/2020 01:31 AM EST

he latest Democratic presidential debate Friday night in New Hampshire put the fundamental dynamic at work in this nominating contest under a very bright light.

There is one candidate only, Sen. Bernie Sanders, who by every indication is staying put. His lines were familiar, his performance as spirited as ever. But the jabs and jostling of debate nights — this was the eighth since June, and the direct confrontations were fairly muted — don’t matter so much for him.

That’s because he’s got a corps of people devoted to him and his ideology who don’t need to hear new arguments, as they did for two-and-a-half hours, about health care or racial justice or who is most likely to beat Donald Trump: They long ago reached an answer. Sanders is going nowhere anytime soon from his position at or near the top of this contest.

Every other candidate is going somewhere very soon. For all but one, or at most two of those candidates that somewhere is down. In a sense, the encounter at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, aired nationally by ABC News, had only one question: This is a race between Sanders and BLANK.

All six others on the stage had some very effective moments; all six also came out of the debate with questions about their durability still hovering.

He's got a cult following to rival Trump's who unquestioningly accept everything he says.

which in itself reveals some level of desperation. A non-desperate candidate talks freely and off the cuff.

Last night’s debate was important. I don’t think we should knock anyone for being prepared. Her interview with Tweety afterwards was just great..off script...she was quite warm and engaging.

A good candidate understands their material well enough to make it appear that they're talking freely and off-the-cuff.

If you don't believe that all of the candidates script most of their material and have prepared answers for expected questions, you're fooling yourself.

I saw a very inspiring Amy Klobuchar, strong showings from all but Yang.

BS and his endless loop finga wagging answer to every question is tiring.

really like her persona, but have concerns about her positions on issues. The standard Democratic Party approach of trying to accomplish big things through very small bites has failed miserably on the balanced economy front for 4-plus decades now. It's time to throw out incrementalism and start from the goal of accomplishing big changes. Maybe then we will actually achieve some real progress.

That is why I support Sanders and Warren ahead of every other candidate. They get it.

Having said that, my pledge is to Vote Blue No Matter Who.

Klobuchar is very well spoken and has been an excellent senator. However, I think she understates the nature of structural challenges that will require bold solutions.

Still, with her energy and clarity, I think she should be #1 among the moderates and would be a very good GE candidate.
