That Kiss, and Other Daily Indignities - #MeToo isn't just about rape and harassment

In the days since Lucy Flores detailed an encounter with Joe Biden that made her feel “uneasy, gross, and confused,” we have seen in real time the limits of how much Americans are willing to listen to women.

After Flores described a meeting where Biden put his hands on her shoulders, smelled her hair, and kissed her head, the former Nevada assemblywoman has been accused of everything from misunderstanding an everyday friendly interaction to deliberately trying to ruin Biden’s potential presidential run.

Some people have even compiled photo collages of Flores being embraced by other politicians — a sign, supposedly, of her hypocrisy. If she didn’t mind these touches, they say, why give Biden a hard time?

All these reactions demonstrate the same thing: We are not comfortable talking about the violations women endure unless they’re explicit, violent, or illegal.

How this has become a targeted attack on a damn good man is damaging to the metoo movement.

We cannot currently have an honest discussion about the patriarchal tendencies in society, or with Biden, because of Flores.

We need to be able to make a clear distinction between sexual predation and social cluelessness. I don't care to be touched or hugged by people I don't know, but I can tell the difference between sexual touching, which is always offensive, and excessive familiarity, which is merely annoying. Biden and Franken might be accused of social cluelessness but they are not sexual predators and don't deserve to be placed in or even near the same category as Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby (and Donald Trump).

"But ultimately, this is not about him" I call foul... right here, right now!

There is a bigger issue that needs to be addressed as discussed in the essay, but right now, especially here in this forum, that is not the issue and what we are talking about here (in the Democratic Primaries Forum) IS all about Joe Biden... this article belongs in General Discussion, not here...

there probably isn't a greater advocate of women and their concerns than me (I've been a victim, as have my daughters... I used to shelter abused women in my home and I have fought for them and counseled them)… women need to be heard and changes need to be made,... I believe Lucy Flores has a right to her feelings in the appropriate avenue, but right here, right now, it is about something else

with a goal that it will somehow hurt Biden.

In reality, it is hurting Sanders because it is focusing a spotlight on his campaign as the originator of dirty tricks. Many people who had a positive view of Sanders are rethinking. This comes on the heels of hiring David Sirota and Brihana Gray.

People are not stupid. They can smell a rat very easily and it reflects poorly on Sanders.

If Sanders were wise, he would stop what his campaign is doing and get to releasing his tax returns.

Two more women accuse Biden of inappropriate touching

Two additional women came forward Tuesday to say former Vice President Joe Biden touched them in ways that made them uncomfortable.

The women, Caitlyn Caruso and D. J. Hill, each recounted their experiences to The New York Times.

Caruso, 22, told the Times that Biden rested his hand on her thigh even as she attempted to show her discomfort by squirming in her seat during a sexual assault event at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Caruso, who was 19 at the time, added that Biden hugged her "just a little bit too long."

She told the newspaper that the interaction was uncomfortable because she had just discussed a time she was sexually assaulted and expected Biden to be aware of physical boundaries.

“It doesn’t even really cross your mind that such a person would dare perpetuate harm like that,” she told the paper. “These are supposed to be people you can trust.”

Hill, 59, told the Times that while taking a photograph with Biden in 2012, the then-vice president placed his hand on her shoulder and began moving it down her back, something she said made her "very uncomfortable."
