I'm really worried. So worried my stomach is in knots

Bernie has the support to win the nomination but only because support is so divided among many candidates. He's not a strong favorite for democrats broadly. I'm from Traverse City MI. I don't know anyone who supports Bernie. I'm afraid voter turnout will be low if it's Bernie vs Trump. What I personally worry about most is Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Trump nominating more RW judges. I try to convince my peers and family to vote blue no matter who but it's looking like a hard sell. People tell me things like, "AOC says we don't belong in her party," she only talked about unity when it looked like Sanders could win." Or, "I don't think they want their revolution tainted with corporate neoliberal shills so if he is the nominee I'm sitting it out." That's what I hear from democrats my age, 33. What I hear from my older relatives is that he is a communist. When I try to explain democratic socialism to them, they come at me with, " Bernie only recently started calling it that. "He has a long history of supporting straight up communism." I see my older relatives sharing a youtube video of Bernie called. "Why Bernie Sanders' Communist Misadventures Still Matter." It's hard to convince them otherwise. With Bernie's campaign having a history of not supporting the party's nominee... It's going to be hard for them to sell Bernie to people who would otherwise vote blue no matter who. Make no mistake. I will vote and work for Bernie should he be the nominee, I want Trump out so bad. Here in Michigan, I don't see many others jumping to do the same. Heck! Trump's approval is going up! I absolutely know Bernie supporters do not see it this way but, I think they have blinders on. They love him so much they can't see anyone else not loving him. Bernie has strong support to be sure but not broadly among the most. HELP. What do we do?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Biden will do better in other states. Warren - I support her but she seems to be losing traction? Not sure why and it bothers me.

But ultimately having a credible candidate and getting people to the polls in November and voting D is what matters.

Having disarray in the nomination process does not help with voter turnout in the fall; it makes people more suspect of the process and more likely to think the value of their vote is not worth overcoming whatever obstacles they face in casting it.

And its going to continue on. I don't know what the solution is. No one is going to stand down, but look at the NH polls tonight. Klobuchar is moving up and taking from Pete, so now Pete, Warren. Klobuchar and Biden will come in 2 -5 and Bernie will just march on.
It's exactly how Trump got the Republican nomination last team. He split the moderate Rs (Kasich, Rubio, Christie etc)

...inherently better or worse than deciding to appeal more to the moderates.

I wrote about this in my post in the thread at https://www.democraticunderground.com/1287486770

The OP had quoted from an article that said:

Ideologues are elected more often than they used to be. Outsiders are elected more often, too. And the percentage of true swing voters is shrinking, Utych said. So does that mean someone like Sanders is more electable and someone like former Vice President Joe Biden is less electable? Electability here becomes a game of divining which group is more important to winning — swing voters or the partisan base. But that’s no more accurate than trying to estimate how sexist your neighbors are. “Which segment is bigger … there’s not great information on that,” Utych said. “Anything you say is just guessing.”

And in my agreement, I expanded on it this way:

We really don't know which group gets us more votes. Biden and Sanders (as our two extremes) would both get the vote of virtually every true Dem (certainly when the alternative is Trump). But beyond that, what gets us more votes... appealing to the moderate middle and "reasonable" Republicans? or appealing to the more extreme left partisans and the anti-establishment outsiders who want to shake things up? In 2016, we attempted to appeal to the moderate middle, while Trump went for the highly partisan and anti-establishment group. We lost that one. Something to think about.

As I've also said elsewhere, I think come November, it is highly likely that any Dem candidate gets all the states Hillary did... yes, even Sanders, who I think is actually positioned pretty well. Some voters in those states may like Hillary more than Bernie, others may like Bernie more than Hillary, but either way, enough of them don't like Trump that they even chose a candidate in 2016 who was underwater in favorables (that is, to get as close as she did, she actually had to get many votes from people who didn't particularly like her in those states). So I think all those "anti Trump" states likewise go to Bernie. If anything, the demographics favor Bernie more this time, because 4 years later, we have a new influx of voters who were too young to be eligible to vote last time, and the youth vote heavily favors Sanders.

So to me, the big variable as to whether or not Bernie can beat Trump is whether he can sufficiently out-perform Hillary to be able to beat Trump in at least three of these states: Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, and Florida. I think he has enough working class appeal to win that chunk of what Hillary couldn't in at least three of those states. I think most if not all of our other candidates do as well. So I am optimistic.

Because anyone will be way, way better than Trump. Support whoever you want in the primaries, but understand that you aren’t the only one making this decision. Frankly, I feel similarly concerned about whether Biden can win in November, but I will not be damaging any of our likely nominees to the point where if they do end up in the General half the GOP’s job will have been done for them. if Bernie gets the nod, centrists will have to do what they’ve been screaming at those on the left to do for decades... suck it up, vote (and get your family and friends to vote) Dem. Support this nominee as if the fate of our nation and world depends on it. It’s not an exaggeration this time to say that’s the case.

Whoever your preferred Primary candidate is, by all means make the case. But once we have one? It’s them on Trump, and if you honestly believe *any* of our nominees are worse than 4 more years of Trump... you’re probably on the wrong site. Hillary was not my choice in the primaries last time, but I was very, very happy to support her against Trump. I wasn’t thrilled Bernie decided to run again (he is actually not my preferred candidate this time) however... people can’t have it both ways. You can’t spend four years screaming “vote blue no matter who” and the add the *unless it’s Bernie. He’s an asshole. There are a lot of people - voters we need desperately in places like PA and MI - who have significant barriers to voting. They will be motivated to overcome those barriers and vote, in greater numbers, by enthusiasm for the Dem candidate and a belief that person will be better for them and not "more of the same" or indifferent to their issues.

I believe there are a lot of voters who will never develop that enthusiasm for Sanders. Warren isn't there yet but I believe she has the potential and will recognize the need to do it. She doesn't have the negative past history of Sanders. Biden clearly has the largest "identity" groups won over. Mayor Pete ... appeals to a different important subset but frankly that probably doesn't outweigh his likely non-performance with the larger subset. Amy, I don't know about yet. Bloomberg is a cipher to me in this regard. He may have the $$$$$$ (like 50 times more than Steyer) to overcome almost any perception issues, even stop-and-frisk. But I'm wary of counting on that.

Those of us who live in between the coastal liberal bastions know that Sanders will not win the presidency. Hopefully, those same places and states and Democrats will keep Sanders at bay and elect a viable candidate.

It's more like observation. I refuse to make any judgements about the results of a process when the process is just getting underway.
I refuse to let events I cannot control affect my personal life and personal emotions. If I start to feel these events affecting my personal feelings, I'll take a media break and simply turn off the computer for a few days or as long as it takes.
I cannot control what happens in the political process other than my own vote. What I can control is the way I let the process affect my feelings and emotions.

a candidate with chants of "wall street Pete" will have a hard time getting people to plug their nose for them.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

This is where we become Americans and not Amerikans.

I'm in Traverse City MI, I talk to a lot of people who call themselves democrats that say they're OK with Trump if it's Trump vs Bernie. It scares the shit out of me. Bush was reelected after the Iraq debacle.

18. There are several thing we need to do to win
Sun Feb 9, 2020, 02:49 AM
Feb 2020

1. We need to come up with a way to get disillusioned Democrats and independents to trust the Democratic party again.
2. Convince Never Trumpers to vote blue or stay home on election day
3. Reach out to independents who have never voted before and convinced them to vote blue
4. Possibly move to a purple state and vote blue there
5. vote

If we do most of that we can win no problem

and not be split four or five ways. Unfortunately it’s hard to say who that should be. I think probably Biden or Warren. Whoever it is, we need to narrow it down to one or two to keep Bernie from claiming momentum. He cannot win this fall and should not be our nominee.

I'm a 3rd generation NYC liberal. My entire family, including in law's, are all liberal. We believe Bloomberg will be the candidate and we couldn't be more thrilled.

Please don't get distracted with the Cherry picked things he did that weren't fabulous. Even Obama didn't believe in gay marriage early in his presidency, people can change and evolve.

This guy is putting his money where his mouth is, please do some research and stay hopeful.

And Bloomberg bashers, read this last paragraph carefully:

The thing I like best about Mike is he is opening huge numbers of field offices and will turn them over to the eventual nominee EVEN IF IT ISN'T HIM because he wants a Democrat to win. He hasn't and will not trash any of the Democrats. And he is going to pay the workers in the field offices, and give them health Care, himself. Nobody else in the field is being this cooperative, nobody.

Years of Bernie supporters being ridiculed for not putting party before personal feelings - even though more of his supporters voted for Hillary than her supporters voted for Obama...

And now this

If he's our nominee and Dems sit out, it will create a division that will not be healed. I can promise you that.
