WASHINGTON As former Vice President Joe Biden's camp scrambles to contain any political damage over his past behavior with women, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has some words of advice: Keep your distance.
"Join the straight-arm club," Pelosi told a breakfast hour Washington event on Tuesday.
In other words, keep your handshakes at arms' length and don't be touchy-feely.
"Just pretend you have a cold and I have a cold," Pelosi said.
Pelosi, D-Calif., told the event, which was sponsored by Politico, that Biden "has to understand that in the world we are in now people's space is important to them and what's important is how they receive it, not necessarily how you intended it."

I guess the differentiating factor is is that a person you know or don't know very well. If you don't know them then perhaps it's best to err on the side of caution.
This article doesn't say it but I've seen elsewhere that Nancy Pelosi does not feel Biden's behavior disqualifies him from running.

There's nothing more disturbing than watching people touch and grab at the president and vice president.

(41,987 posts)She didnt say touchy-feely, the article threw that in. The demand for exact phrasing from him in order to satisfy myriad different requirements and the implication it hasnt been addressed at all is maddening. I wish hed just come out and make a speech about it, announce hes running or not, and talk about it for a solid week so people just do t have anything else to say, ask or imply.

(41,987 posts)Id have no problem with likes to touch people, hugs people all the time, gets closer than most when he talks, puts his hands on peoples shoulders a lot, stands close behind and whispers in peoples ears, etc.
And she didnt say it.

(41,987 posts)because as with everyone else who wasnt there I dont know what the actual act or intent were, but was it friendly, big-hearted Oh, hey! Look at you! And you smell lovely! Or is it Mmmmm...baby, let me smell somma that...
Its not all the same. People use scented products all the time so theyll smell nice. A kind, admiring noticing is far different from a skeevy, inuendo laced assault. I believe the women, that it bothered them. I fault the men who really DO give women skeevy, suggestive hugs for part of that. And I recognize its better to hold back and be more distant, recognizing that people dont always interpret an embrace as supportive and loving. But Ive been watching TV closely these days and theres a LOT of embracing and cheek kissing and touching during conversation. A lot.

(102,294 posts)to go away. I can not imagine how many families of military dead or school shootings and similar he must have helped immensely with a hug, a hand on the shoulder and leaning in to give a private word of comfort. I find it hard to believe that he would not pull back with even subtle cues that such contact was not warranted.
And frankly, I hope that IF these women are making more of an innocent act than is warranted--for whatever reason--that they enjoy a contact-free sterile existence from henceforth. I don't know that they are, but IF they are...
